Dexter 5.01 My Bad
Sep. 28th, 2010 08:32 pmYou know... I haven't been very impressed by Dexter as a show for the last couple of seasons. I think it lost its grip on its central character and its grasp of suspense (instead we got boredom punctuated by occasional melodrama). But there are some characters that own my heart and Deborah Morgan is one of them. And holy fuck, that was an amazing performance. Jennifer Carpenter is one of the most compelling actresses I've ever seen on the small screen. If you aren't up for extreme character partisan-ship, this isn't the review for you: I get a leetle bit emotional.
( to me, it's always seemed the other way around )

It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a bop_radar.
You know what really is? The fact that this is my most hated song ever. Followed closely by 'Say My Name'.
In other news. I hate my job. And! ( something finally happened in Dexter Season 3 )
Of happyfulness is All He Wants For Christmas,

I use this icon in honour of Lee Week, which is most happy-making and which I insist is still continuing because:
a) I was terribly busy and need to catch up on some of the posts, and
b) it's always Lee Week.
Also, I may have succumbed to the gayness of both Merlin and Crusoe. Somebody saaaaaaave meeeeeeeee! (Oh whooops, wrong gay show.)
The eclectic-ity of this post is brought to you by South Australian shiraz and a really REALLY bad day at work.
TV is back!
Sep. 7th, 2008 08:28 pmI am so RELIEVED. This hiatus was rough--but I only have myself to blame really. Anyway... *makes handwavey motions onwards*

Dexter 2.09 Resistance is Futile
Nov. 27th, 2007 06:33 pmI have a stack of things to post about tonight. I toyed with the idea of making one massive post, but decided my brain wasn't organised enough. So I may be spamming LJ in the next couple of hours...

Dexter 2.08
Nov. 20th, 2007 12:02 amIt's late and hot and I can't sleep--it kind of feels like it could be Miami--and it's probably NOT a good idea for me to be watching 'Dexter' when I'm home alone, insomniac and prone to nightmares. Perhaps I should take a leaf out of Deb's book and go work out for a while. Nah, meta's more appealing.

Random note: BSG fans, please consider helping the hiatus drought and leaving prompts for the first challenge at
bsg_hiatusthon! (I totally need to go leave mine!)

Playing catch-up
Nov. 13th, 2007 09:40 pmSince the first screenings of Razor have now happened, I've unlocked my Razor meta post and some follow-up thoughts. My thoughts have evolved a lot further than this thanks to some great meta discussions already, but I've had little time to pull them together into a post. I see a few others unlocking their posts--I want to rec a bunch of great (currently locked) posts at some stage so that's exciting!
The last few days have been horrendous for me and I owe a lot of people a lot of things--comments, posts, feedback, emails, time. Sorry, guys! Thanks for bearing with me.
However, I do have some good news! You remember my whinge about the BSG hiatus? (It wasn't really that, but you know what I mean.) Well, thanks to everyone suggestions, I've set up a new community:
bsg_hiatusthon. I hope it can be a place where we can organise some ficathons and challenges for the fandom as a whole (NOT just K/L shippers, despite the way my f'list is slanted :p) over the coming months, and I have ideas for the first one already. I was going to wait until then to pimp it, but
siljamus has done such a lovely job with the layout, you should check it out. More details to come as soon as I catch my breath!
( super speedy thoughts on Friday Night Lights 2.06 )
( brief squee about Dexter 2.07 )

TV round-ups
Oct. 30th, 2007 02:44 pm( Friday Night Lights 2.04 )
( Dexter season 2, episodes 1-5 )
( breaking up with Bionic Woman )
( Ugly Betty 2.05--did you even know I watched this show?! *g* )
Am still thinky re. an all-BSG-fandom ficathon. Follow up to follow when brain kicks in. :p
In personal news I suck. Or rather my vitamin levels still suck despite months of diligent effort. Since I've also failed to lose any weight during this time, I'm officially sulking. So little coffee, so little result?!?! *fake huffs*

Before I got hijacked by my own squee about
bananainpyjamas's Break, I was going to rec her Matrix vid. My Own Summer, a Neo character study through all three movies, is a magnificent achievement. I'm in awe of her action vid construction--completely masterful and awesome eyecandy. I downloaded the glorious large version--it's seriously spectacular stuff!
bradcpu's Vertigo is a Season 2 House vid that I really admire. It's uncomfortable and trippy viewing, which is true to the season, my favourite season so far. I don't often talk about House, but I've had a lot of issues with Season 3. This was a welcome reminder of its strengths back in Season 2. The vid gets better and better on rewatching, though I felt more than a little strung out after watching it three times in a row! ;-)
Another vid coming out of the Reverie Style Contest is Precious by Xandra, a Dexter vid. Dexter's another show I don't often talk about but which I enjoyed. I've found that people have very different takes on Dex's character, so this vid may not be for everyone, but I found it very powerful.
While we're on Dexter, I've been meaning to rec
chasarumba's Keep Breathing, a Deb character study. Deb is my favourite character on Dexter, my way 'in' to the Dexter universe, as I find Dex himself difficult to say the least. I adore Deb in all her brittle gawky awkwardness and vulnerability, and this vid is a beautiful tribute to her.
Exploring Xandra's imeem page after watching 'Precious', I found her Twin Peaks vid, Angel. It brought back all the creepy horror of that show (and it helped that it was made to one of my favourite Massive Attack tracks). If you are in the mood for some nostalgic creepiness, I definitely recommend it.
In time for the Heroes finale,
obsessive24 has made a spectacular and playful Sylar character study: One of a kind. With spoilers up to 1.18, it features some of the best moments from our favourite brain-eating psychopath. Tip: watch out for the line 'two of a kind, and no-one home'! ;-)
And finally, for my BSG peeps,
m_a_r_i_k_s has been reuploading her Lee and Kara vids, which I've been thoroughly enjoying. I particularly recommend Don't Mess With Me for it's Lee point-of-view.

Squeeing my way into 2007...
Jan. 5th, 2007 12:42 pmSo I've been on vacation mode and consequently have spent more than a normal amount of time in front of my ibook screen. Some of it was fannish catch-up; passing thoughts on various things cut-tagged below.
( On rewatching Heroes 1.01-1.08 )
( On being a sheep and caving to Final Night Lights )
( On watching the first two eps of Dexter )
( On rereading books 1-3 of A song of ice and fire by GRR Martin )
But there is so much more to watch and read! *stares at pile of DVDs and books accumulated over the Christmas break*
