kass: chartreuse new leaves (spring)
[personal profile] kass
1. Connecting with a cousin who is dying. We had a beautiful chat on FB messenger. I'm grieving her departure from this life (timeline unknown, as usual), and am also feeling grateful for the connection.

2. I walked 10,000 steps at my standing desk today. Five miles, y'all. Haven't done that in... probably years? It's already worth every penny I spent on the wall-mounted monitor omg.

3. I refilled the bird feeder -- I've seen glorious yellow goldfinches there today, and also female cardinals with their wash of red. I put a little sock full of goldfinch seed in the burning bush, also, and we'll see if it attracts more.

4. Now I have a warm purring cat on my lap, gnawing happily on my belt loops as is his wont. Oh wait, he went to go sit by a window and watch birdfeeder tv instead. But he was on my lap for a minute, and it was cozy.

5. Today when I go to lunch with [personal profile] woobat I will carry a chartreuse-green purse that was my mom's. It matches the baby leaves on the trees.

I was reminded in conversation over episode 2 that I forgot all about the show version of Daenerys' visions in the House of the Undying, which are undoubtedly important to where the show is going.

kass: lilacs, "zen fen" (zen lilac)
[personal profile] kass
1. It finally feels like spring. The trees are popping with leaves. Bits of stunning chartreuse and early red.

2. Tonight I'm going to try making karaage (Japanese fried chicken), which is marinated in soy and ginger and sake and then coated with cornstarch and shichimi togarashi, so it's naturally glutenfree and KFP (by my lights; those who don't eat cornstarch during Pesach would obviously disagree; it can also be made with potato starch, if you prefer.)

3. I'm not yet tired of matzah snacking. This morning I had matzah with labneh and zata'ar for breakfast, which does not suck. :-) It will still be nice to return to bread next weekend, but I am not minding the matzah.

4. I did a bunch of work at my walking desk this morning, and now I'm on my mirpesset with a laptop -- still getting work done, but in the fresh air, hooray.

5. Did I mention that it's spring at last?

Trying to vid for the first time in years, and I've gone back to MPEG Streamclip for clipping purposes, but as well as no longer being as stable as it used to be, it doesn't seem to be able to deal with large .mkv files.

I have no problem clipping the .mkv that are around 1 gb 720p but can't deal with .mkv files that are around 4gb 1080p. (I'm not technically savvy enough to know whether it's the size or the encoding it's having an issue with).

Any recommendations for for newer software that might deal with files better? (I'm using Lightworks for the actual vidding)

Game of Thrones!

I've had this post sitting in drafts all week, so now in order to get it posted before episode 2 airs, I'm sitting here in a corner at family Easter furiously typing on my sticker-covered nerd laptop.

(I just lost half an hour to Game of Thrones discussion after I said out loud, “is this on brand?” And then had to explain to my cousin that I'm trying to catch up on Game of Thrones “blog posts” before the episode. I'm not the only one here mentally plotting how to get home in time for the new episode!)

This post is ... not brief? My word processor clocks it at 4,716 words. I have a lot of Game of Thrones thoughts. Apologies if I'm overlooking anything or have forgotten any key details -- I did a partial rewatch to get ready for this season, but not a full one, and it's been a while since I've opened the books.

I've seen the trailer for the season and I know when in the season events in it take place (mostly because it has been very, very widely discussed in media). That partially informs this post, so if you skipped the trailer, this will spoil you for part of what was in it.

So with that, I'll jump right in:

Who, if anyone, wins the game of thrones? )

Who makes it to the end? )

Questions I would like answers to before the series ends )

Things I would like to see happen before the series ends )

There are probably a lot of other things I've forgotten that I want to know or see – there's so much in the source that it's hard to sit here and try to come up with every bit of possible foreshadowing, every possible seeded story or dropped thread. And that's part of what I like about Game of Thrones: there are so many things that could turn out to be important, it's almost impossible that we won't be surprised at least a few times as the show winds to a close.

I'm excited! Bring on episode 2, so that all of my speculation can immediately be proven wrong.

1. Two sedarim -- one with family, one with the shul. So many melodies and words, songs and flavors, that connect me -- in to myself, up to my Source, through to the generations.

2. My kid's glee at whacking [personal profile] sanj and me with a scallion last night at the second seder.

3. Matzah brei for breakfast. I am firmly in the savory camp (this is matzah chilaquiles, basically, not French toast) and mmm, so peppery and good.

4. Iced coffee on my mirpesset. And I put the screens back in four of the downstairs windows and have opened them! because it feels like spring today!

5. A few precious hours of post-seder downtime before the workweek begins, hallelujah.

I have eaten an entire plate of chocolate and kickstarted a super cute set of tabletop cat miniatures, Happy Easter to me.

Today is also my tenth dreamwidth anniversary. HOW. What even is time. My intro post is still dated 2020, from lj days of yore where we had no stickies and we made a post that would stay on top forever. I guess we're living in the future.

At least the future has VR. And even more so now, with PS5 confirmed to have backwards comparability, including the PSVR. Cranky I left home just as Falcon Age, Ghost Giant, and Table of Tales came out, but very happy to see they've all been reviewed well, especially GG. Fingers crossed ToT does well enough to get some DLCs, more tabletop simulators with neat mechanics and branching storylines is A+ in my book.

While you're here, check out this lovely Notre Dame tribute somebody built in No Man's Sky =)

(sorry for all the PSVR chatter, I know nobody cares. I've actually unlocked my twitter so I can participate in conversations there. Let's hope the horde doesn't find me!)

Spring Equinox brought me presents!

Spring Equinox is up and I got two vids!

Ultralife | Star Trek: Voyager, Harry/Tom/B'Elanna - A Voyager OT3 vid! For me! Someone said to me (jokingly ... I think), "are you sure you didn't make the Voyager vid made for you?" This vid is so perfectly everything I love that I'm surprised I didn't make it for myself. Just an A+ job of making me happy.

Mykonos | Highlander, Joe/Methos - That's right, I got a Joe/Methos vid and now feel like I win at Highlander fan life. Today I am truly fulfilled as a Joe Dawson slasher.

The exchange is brimming over with awesome stuff this year and I won't try to rec it all (everything is good! I haven't watched all the vids yet but I know this to be true), but here are some I still have open in tabs because I keep going back to watch them again:

Bad Influence | Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Canyon | Xena: Warrior Princess
Come Away with Me | Northern Exposure
Ice ice baby | Demolition Man
My Hero | Batman movies
Send Me On My Way | Wishbone
Sound of Her Wings | The Sandman (comics)
Take Over | The Craft
This Time's Everything | The X-Files

Taking Sam/Rowena prompts

Y'all, I accidentally (I swear) wrote (sort of) death fic for my [livejournal.com profile] spnspringfling recipient, [livejournal.com profile] de_nugis. And now I feel super guilty about it, and would so welcome any Sam/Rowena prompts that might strike you. I promise nothing, but guilt is a powerful motivator.

While I'm here, let me wholeheartedly rec the Sam/Rowena delightfulness that was written for me:

Title: i saw a video essay about this, once by [livejournal.com profile] duckondebut
Pairing: Sam/Rowena
Rating: PG-13
Any warnings: vague spoilers for s13, some depictions of violence and gore, mild swearing

Completely charming and hilarious, the author got Rowena to the last beautiful, snarky degree, and I loved it.

I promise next time to make a happy (okay, happier) Guardian vid. This is not that vid. This song came on the spotify station inspired by no_detective's playlist (thank you spotify algorithms) and I immediately stopped everything to listen to it three times in a row and knew I had to vid it (also immediately). Immediately actually took a while, but here it is. Thank you so so much to [personal profile] no_detective for brainstorming and to [personal profile] bonibaru for beta-ing.
