Ok, so in a valiant effort to post more often, I have decided to rec vids every Wednesday. I've got stacks I always wanted to rec but never got to, so over time recs will be rolled out, and hopefully they'll help a few people find vids that they maybe missed when they first got put up.

Speaking of vids, like so many, I have migrated to BAM Vid Vault and also to Blip. I've even uploaded a few more vids to YouTube, just for the hell of it. Relevant vid announcement posts have been updated with streaming links. Blip is prettiest and accessible for people without an account there, but I'm loving the community aspect of BAM. I've already stumbled across some great vids by surfing around there, and I'm sure I'll come across lots more. I've been very hit and miss with what I've watched or favourited there so far as I've tended to surf while my own vids are uploading, so if I don't have you friended and/or have missed vids of yours, let me know you're there and I'll head on over.

Ok, recs.

It was near impossible to decide where to start, I have such a backlog, but I thought I'd start with five of the most outstanding vids of the year so far, in my eyes:

Unnatural Selection by [livejournal.com profile] charmax: anyone that knows me knows I love T:SCC and love/hate Battlestar Galactica, but am completely fascinated by the themes inherent in both. Well this vid takes the parallels to symphonic heights in a vid that is smart and funny and gloriously watchable.

I'm on a BOAT by [livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic: Star Trek (the film) didn't press my buttons but the vid totally did. So much damn FUN! Makes me wish I were in the fandom so that this could be my anthem! And I'm hanging for the remastered-with-DVD-footage version.

The delightful [livejournal.com profile] talitha78 has produced so many gems this year I had a hard time choosing which one to rec first, but I think I have to go with White and Nerdy, for its courage in putting a comedic spin on racial stereotypes. And it totally made me want to watch Psych. I do, after all, heart nerds.

(Random overheard dialogue from the kids outside my window: 'You don't have any friends!' Awwwww. They didn't mean me, by the way. Honest.)

[livejournal.com profile] bananainpyjamas's Khawaab (The Dream) captures Slumdog Millionaire's poignant central narrative beautifully. You don't need to have seen the movie to enjoy the smooth-flowing, dreamlike vid.

And for the SV fans... In This Life, a Clark/Lois vid from [livejournal.com profile] brokenmnemonic, which I may have had a hand in coaxing into creation. It makes great use of some of the terrific material Season 8, for all its faults, gave us, and even made me like the almost-kiss. ;)

And there you go. For now. More next week!

Need something to watch while you wait for Smallville to download? Feeling the need of a Clex-injection mid-Season 8?

I recommend [livejournal.com profile] bananainpyjamas (aka dragonchic)'s Intergalactic Friends. :D It's like doing a SHOT of Clex, I swear. Or maybe 10 shots in quick succession...

My dear friend [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 is learning to vid. It is a very exciting time for her and I have enjoyed reliving my own first baby steps in vidding through her. We have talked a lot about vidding recently, and particularly why certain vids appeal to us. It's a very hard thing to define, but the best explanation I can give is: I like vids with heart.

A vid can transport me into another world, it can take me inside a character's journey, it can show me a particular source through the vidder's eyes--no matter what it's aim is, what matters to me is whether I can feel the heart of the vidder in that vision. It's not clumsy tech or lack of effects that will leave me unmoved, it's lack of passion. Of course this is subjective--sometimes a vidder's passion doesn't translate for me--but if it's true to its inspiration, then I believe that it will translate for someone out there. Which is one of the things I love most about vidding.

[livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 wrote her own post in tribute to vids with heart so I am following in her footsteps here.

I am hopelessly sniffly at the moment, thanks to a pesky cold that descended on me on the last day of a long weekend. It's been hard to take time off work (I've got some really high maintenance authors at the moment) but today I couldn't string long enough between sneezing fits to actually drive to work, so I've been at home watching 30 Rock, which, may I say, is perfect sick-person TV.

In my efforts to catch up on Vividcon vids I've been kind of OD-ing on great vids to add to the backlog of recs I already had to make. But a few standout favourites I must rec straight up are:

- [livejournal.com profile] mranderson71's This Is Matrix Life, a total must-see. It has comedy, slick moves (from vidder as well as in source!) and the perfect marriage of source + song.

- [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro's Shut Up and Drive--the best Martha (of Doctor Who) vid I've seen, and that girl definitely deserves kickass vidding!

- [livejournal.com profile] keewick's Sorry is a sequel to last year's 'Sugar', the Lana vid that I loved so much. And I'm delighted she revisited Lana here to explore the later season material. (There's also a snazzy Gossip Girl vid and some SGA goodies I haven't checked out in that post.)

- Not strictly a Vividcon vid, I think, but if you missed it in July's International Day of Femslash, [livejournal.com profile] charmax's I'm Your Man showcases an exceptional number of sources, in a documentary of femslash set to music (it really reminded me of 'Celluloid Closet').

All the great vids mean I've got vidding on the brain at the moment (what brain is left behind the cold) so I have a couple of questions for other vidders of the 'is this just me or a common phenomenon?' kind )

This weekend was Vividcon weekend, and the flurry of premiere posts has begun! I am very excited to see all the new vids and have managed to at least temporarily overcome my envy for all those that actually attended by gorging on some of the new goodies tonight. I didn't get very far because several of these vids necessitated much rewatching...

[livejournal.com profile] bradcpu has blown my mind again with his ability to craft mesmerising nightmare-vision, this time with Tear You Apart, one of the most fascinating Firefly vids I've ever seen (heed the spoiler warning and don't read the notes until you've watched the vid for full effect).

45 by [livejournal.com profile] bananainpyjamas is the Bill Adama character study vid that needed to be made. It fills a big hole in the BSG vidding canon, and does so with impeccable style (and bonus LEE! *predictable*).

Keeping up the slash vidder quota, [livejournal.com profile] talitha78 gives us Summer Love--a delicious, hilarious tribute to the Seth/Ryan OTP of the O.C. I am delighted to be able to rec this to my O.C. fan friends AT LAST!

And another vid so *right* it feels like it always existed... [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu's Creep, exploring Faith and Spike in relation to Buffy.

In other news: RL sucks, authors are fuckwits, and I have a migraine. Can I live in my computer plz?

Friday Night Lights vid recs
I haven't posted many vid recs in ages, and I have a bit of a backlog which I hope to get to soon, but as a start I have a treat (two treats!) today for the Friday Night Lights fans on my friendslist. And for anyone who wants to know why you should watch this show... start here, with two amazing vids from [livejournal.com profile] chasarumba:

Something Beautiful is a Tami character study and an incredibly eloquent portrait of motherhood. It captures Tami's strength and determination, as well as her struggles and her fragility. It's a beautiful tribute to one of my favourite female characters on television. Tami is at once ordinary and extraordinary--I guess that's true of motherhood as well--and this vid captures that perfectly.

Let The Sun Fall Down is a vid I should have watched a long, long time ago. But for anyone else like me that hasn't seen it: it is THE perfect Friday Night Lights vid. *calls it* It's beautiful and heartbreaking and spine-tingly and full of HEART. It would have made me miss the show, except that I can just put it on repeat, stick my headphones on, sing along and tear up all over again...

Ten HD are EVIL, I tell you! EVIL. (For the non-Aussies: Ten HD is a new high definition TV channel in Australia.) They smooshed Clark and Lee together in the one ad and thereby rendered me helpless to resist them! Their super-smart marketing strategy involves sci-fi Thursday which sees Smallville and Battlestar Galactica screened back to back at 8:30 and 9:30 respectively. In shiny beautiful HD. It's like I'm their target demographic?!?! They even got Jamie Bamber to do a spiel to camera about it. And their advertising has featured Lee so heavily it's ridiculous. I mean, I'm the last person to complain, but if you watched their ads, you'd think the whole show was about him!

The prospect of watching Smallville's gorgeous visual imagery in high def was kind of irresistable. So, now I've stolen my boyfriend's laptop and am staring at Clark in close-up. :D I must say that so far it's making me marvel at the photography direction even more than ever. I'm noticing details I never saw before (wow, guys, imagine if my meta was even longer! O.O). And Clark, Lana and Lex all have amazing power on screen (alas this eppy has no Lois!).

I wonder which ep of BSG is on tonight... it better have Lee! I doubt my bf will permit two stealings of laptop so this covert flirtation with HD may be a one-off. Oh, and space battles. I want high def battles!

I've been really quiet this week. Sorry. There was some stuff... *waves hands airily*

(OMG CLARK IS SO PRETTY IN SUNLIGHT! *SQUEEEEEEEE*)

It's been dark days for some of my OTPs recently, so I thought I'd share a few links that helped me keep the flame(s) alive:

Clark/Lex
[livejournal.com profile] voldything's Show Me Love is a must-see vid, integrating Season 7 footage beautifully.

Kara/Lee
[livejournal.com profile] wisteria_ takes all the credit here, for hosting a commemorative celebration of favourite Kara/Lee scenes and an unprecedented picspam of pilot nipples.

There's a bunch of other stuff I wanted to rec, but if I don't post now I will get sucked into HDTV and never come out again!! *watching with one eye, blogging with the other* You guys should remind me to post more often so as to avoid this scenario. *nods*

ETA: Why is there no mood icon for 'seduced'?
ETA2: Ahhhh, no BSG tonight. They're just waving BSG Lee around as the carrot. *pouts*
bop_radar: Boppy default (Default)
I am actually trying really hard not to post today because I'm crazy busy trying to do tech tidy up on two vids. However, given how maudlin I've been about BSG this week, I can't hesitate to show you something that's hooked me straight back in, for better or worse.

[livejournal.com profile] m_a_r_i_k_s has made the most gorgeous and intelligent ensemble vid. It does have a lot of the 'big' ships in there (Adama/Roslin and Kara/Lee) but if you're a non-shipper, please don't let that put you off because it masterfully weaves in so many of the characters we love and has lovely little riffs on their interconnectedness. And it has Kendra! (Oh, Kendra, I miss you!)

For the record, my eyes first filled with tears at 2.02 on the first watch and 1.48 on the second--yes, it gets more moving the more I watch.

This is the kind of vid that deserves an essay-length response, except that no essay could ever be so eloquent.

ETA: Oh, and Cylons! It has Cylons too. :) Sympathetic Cylons even. :p :p :p

Thank you to everyone who wrote such kind words on [livejournal.com profile] wisteria's Secret Snap Cup. I hardly ever put my name up on those things so I feel a little embarrassed, but thanks!

And although this is hopelessly late I also wanted to publicly thank [livejournal.com profile] dionusia for writing me The Last Light She Sees, which is a beautiful, tragic-in-a-good-way Kara/Lee AU piece based on the events of Maelstrom.

In other news, I have my vid back! And now I remember what hard work it was. :( Turns out it's waaaaaay more fun to beta other people's vids. Especially when they're as exciting as [livejournal.com profile] brokenmnemonic's Thoughtless, a hypnotically dark Kara vid.

I have a cold for the first time in two years. I forgot how annoying they are! I think all people with colds should be given some kind of house-elf-like creature to bring them hot lemon and honey drinks. That is my Deep Thought for the day. :)

I can hardly believe how long it's been since I posted... very unlike me. I've been around on and off in the last couple of weeks and have been browsing LJ, but I've struggled to find the concentrated time to post. Part of it is having a houseguest still, part of it is work pressure, and part of it is medical. I took an unscheduled reduction in my depression meds (for a mix of reasons both valid and stupid) and I've copped a stack of withdrawal symptoms as a consequence. I'm fine, but it's been a bit rocky, and I've responded by being a little reclusive until I got better.

So. Anyway. Fandom.

I'm a little fannishly restless right now. There's a lot of anticipation and not much pay-off for the spoilerphobic Smallville or BSG fan right now. Thank you to everyone who continues to cut-tag spoilers, because there's sure as hell a lot of them out there right now. *bites nails* On the plus side, I've ordered my Season 3 BSG DVDs from the US at an unbelievably cheap rate due to the ROCKING exchange rate right now. :D :D :D Now I just have to wait patiently for them to arrive...

It feels like my shows have been off air for eons... and with spectacularly poor planning, I'm actually going to be AWAY for the first BSG episode. *weeps* (Though I think the fact that I'll be in a cabin in a tropical rainforest will take the edge off that, just a tad.) Ah well, I've waited this long, I can wait another week. And yes, I am completely resisting all leaked clips.

I'm also craving more Smallville. What is WITH this crazy schedule?! I hate it being strung out like this. Especially with how great the last couple of eps have been.

Enough whingeing from me. Here's a couple of cool things that have cheered me in the little while:
- [livejournal.com profile] charmax made another adorable Pushing Daisies vid
- [livejournal.com profile] dionusia (comedic GENIUS!) helped Lee get his B-Boy 'tude on

Clex fans! GET HERE NOW!!! [livejournal.com profile] talitha78's new vid, using season 6 and 7 footage, is a joy to behold! It's Lex at his drama!queen best, and has had me squeeing all day as I press 'play' over and over. :D

I almost forgot to watch Friday Night Lights this week. Which was a tragedy because oh, what a fabulous episode! Someone needs to tell the writers: volleyball > murder, yo!

Oh, and while I'm in glowy Friday Night Lights mood, everyone's seen American Baby, right? Just checking. ;)

This is my final post for the new-to-me vid-watching challenge--and I'm doing three days in one, so lots of vids!

cut for vid recs for Smallville, Pushing Daisies, Doctor Who and Bollywood )
bop_radar: Boppy default (Default)
This post is my catch-up post so that I'm actually back on track with this challenge. :D Therefore today I am posting recs from TWO new-to-me vidders.

The first is Holly Gilmore, [livejournal.com profile] watcher_junior on LiveJournal. This is her website, where I found a couple of lovely Doctor Who vids:
- Chemistry, which was a fun hype vid. This song is being used everywhere at the moment but I did think it suited the new Who well. And the cute usage of dialogue from the show really lifted this vidlet!
- How to save a life, another Martha-centric vid (yay!). I was impressed with how well this vid showed the way the Doctor kept his emotional walls up around Martha and didn't let her in. The theme of life-saving was also incredibly appropriate for Martha, as both doctor and Companion. And this song expressed her frustration within her relationship with the Doctor very aptly. Yes, it's the Doctor's tragedy, but it's also hard being the person beside him who doesn't know what to do about it but wants to help. And gah, see, the vid made me go all meta-y! :D

My second new-to-me vidder is [livejournal.com profile] heidi8. When I checked out her journal I was very excited to see she'd vidded to Camera Obscura. And while I'm not the biggest Rose fan in the world, I really loved the way their Modern Girl cover worked for telling Rose's story. The focus on the everyday helped to ground this vid in Rose's perspective on her own journey, and I found that easier to get into than some of the 'shippier' Rose vids out there.

And the other vid of hers which I sampled and really enjoyed is a Nathan Petrelli vid. :D Yes, I may no longer post about Heroes, but I still love Nathan. And Charm Attack serves up the goods. There's lots of Peter in there too (duh!) for those of you who like the Petrelli brothers generally. But it definitely made me 'aww' and gush over Nathan all over again.

The last 24 hours have sucked for a lot of people for a lot of different reasons. :( I have prescribed myself Federer (tennis god!) + Portishead (they're back! how exciting is that?!). So far it's kinda working.

Before I get to the vid recs, I feel I should say something about the recent drama at [livejournal.com profile] sv_ledger. Everything you don't really want to need to know about it is in this post. I have nothing to hide about my involvement, and I'm happy to answer anyone's questions about my part in what happened or anything generally about how the Ledger works. [livejournal.com profile] ciaan has written a great post about how she personally collects links. Each of the editors has their own working methods, but we all strive to create a quality fandom newsletter in as fair and impartial a way as possible--and having six very different editors is definitely a big part of that. Believe me, we don't all agree with one another on everything, and there is no evil masterplan. Finally, thank you to everyone who has replied in supportive fashion to [livejournal.com profile] skuf's post.

On to vids...

My NTM vidder of the day is [livejournal.com profile] shoopdancer--a vidder I hadn't heard of until yesterday but who is both a fellow Aussie and really prolific. I picked out these two vids:
- Million Ways to Be Cruel, a Gossip Girl vid focussing on Blair from Chuck's point of view. It's a perfect song choice, with some really cute snappy editing. And I also loved the pink border--gave me nostalgia for melodramatic 80s teen movies. :)
- You're an Ocean, a Chuck vid for Sarah/Chuck. Again, I thought the song choice was excellent for the subject matter--tonally it seemed to really match Chuck's awkward romantic feelings for Sarah. In both cases, these vids drew well on a limited number of episodes.

And yeah, I'm still a day behind, but I shall make up for it on the weekend! *nods* Check out other people's recs in this challenge here.

I'm actually a day behind with [livejournal.com profile] counteragent's vid-watching challenge already. Truly, I fail. I'm not actually behind in the watching part, just the posting, since my online time has been seriously limited. (Work still very hectic.)

But here goes! My first new (to me) vidder is [livejournal.com profile] tearful_eye and I struck gold on my first try! I watched her newest vid, Back Then. It's a Doctor Who, Martha/Ten vid--yay! There's such a plethora of Doctor/Rose vids, but I personally prefer Martha and have been keeping an eye out for Martha vids. And this one's to a Kings of Convenience track that I love! I thought the song selection was unconventional--and I liked that. The tone of the vid is quite unusual--wistful and reflective rather than gushily shippy--and that's very much to my taste. I know there are other Martha fans on my f'list so I definitely recommend checking it out.

And this vidder is totally not new to me (and therefore not part of the challenge) but [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu has posted his Hiro/Ando vid and OMG IT IS CUTEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. *gush* I don't even like Ando! *boggles* But I do like Hiro, and it's got all his most adorable moments, perfectly, seemlessly cut to 'My Hero' by the Foo Fighters. It made me miss Heroes fandom. Or maybe I just miss Season 1...

More vids tomorrow. *bounces*

Guess who I saw play my favourite venue this week, [livejournal.com profile] snarkist?! Sufjan! It was absolutely brilliant. report on the important stuff--like hula hoops )

Right now I'm watching Roger Federer play Tipsarevic, and I'm fretting coz it's gone into a fourth set. Federer's my favourite player on the men's circuit, and I desperately want him to win this year's Open--I know it means a lot to him, since he's so adorably respectful of the Australian tennis tradition. Come on, Roger! Don't fret! (He looks fretty! :() Phew, he broke serve. *wipes brow*

[livejournal.com profile] counteragent is running a new-to-me vid-watching challenge this coming week. The challenge is to watch a new vid (preferably from a vidder you don't know) every day for a week from 21-28 Jan. I've signed up. Anyone wanna join me? :D

Also, if you haven't yet seen [livejournal.com profile] counteragent's tribute to vidding, Destiny Calling, then you're missing a meta-y treat. And it features some of my favourite vids! :D

ETA: WOW, what a match! And aww, he's such a gent.
bop_radar: Boppy default (Default)
First off, thank you to everyone who sent me Christmas cards, and to [livejournal.com profile] snarkist for her OMG!AWESOME mix CD, which I am pouring over right now. (*hugs* You rock!) The mail's been slow here so I keep getting cards every day. *bounces* At this rate, Christmas will last til Easter... :)

I also got b'day prezzies in the form of fic! [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 posted the first part of a very intriguing BSG fic called Circuit and [livejournal.com profile] smact46 wrote me a little Kara/Lee ficlet. I am very lucky. *g*

And it's not a present, but it may as well be because it's so scrummy and because I got to beta it... [livejournal.com profile] brokenmnemonic posted a lovely new Kara/Lee vid.

I wasn't going to do this, but I got inspired by [livejournal.com profile] boom_queen's 2007 vid rec post and [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu's 2007 round-up, as well as [livejournal.com profile] bananainpyjamas's post (from which I snagged the format). Also, I'm procrastinating.

cut for my 2007 vidding summary )
bop_radar: Boppy default (Default)
I had a lovely relaxing Christmas and some productive vidding and knitting time. I also caught up on a lot of TV. The Doctor Who Christmas special was the icing on the cake. I also loved Gossip Girl's Christmas episode. For those of you who told me to watch Mad Men, I have done so, and I think I like it, but I also find it deeply unsettling. It's perhaps not the best show for someone with office-politics related neuroses...

Anyway, I've in holiday mode and am not up to much meta, so instead I have goodies to share. I've uncovered a little trove of great new vids in the last few days!

For my Smallville peeps, there's [livejournal.com profile] talitha78's Christmas Clex vid. I'm seriously in love with the hospital sequence. *giggles* It wouldn't be a Clex Christmas without the obligatory trip to the emergency room...

I've long wished for a great Gaius/Felix vid, and lo! [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell has made it! Another Place to Fall is a wonderfully put together look at Gaius and Gaeta, and their journey through three seasons of pens madness. It's gold. Truly, you MUST all watch it! *nods*

And while still in BSG-mode, [livejournal.com profile] super_kc's Karma Police is a great look at the Final Five, er, Four.

[livejournal.com profile] dayln03 has made my Tyra-loving heart very happy with Breathe Me. Most impressive of all is the way it integrates the Tyra plot from Season 2 organically with Season 1 Tyra. I think it healed something for me to watch it, because Season 2 never sat completely comfortably with me, even though I could see the roots of it in Season 1.

I watched my first Gossip Girl vid and it was gooood. I've become very fond of the Chuck/Blair/Nate triangle, and It Will Be by [livejournal.com profile] proofpudding plays it up beautifully.

Two other goodies for me:
- My copy of Razor arrived.
- I went to see 'Golden Compass' today and declare it to be most beee-autiful! *G*
bop_radar: Boppy default (Default)
I am filled with warm fuzzies for BSG fandom at the moment. The response to the first challenge at [livejournal.com profile] bsg_hiatusthon has been really wonderful so far--we have sign-ups for nearly every day between now and Christmas! It would, of course, be super-cool if there was a post every day... *makes puppy eyes* If anyone out there feels like jumping in with an early drabble, late sign-ups can be accepted here.

I'm a bit behind on my meta-reading post-Razor and have guilt about needing to get to a few posts on my f'list, but my brain's been kind of mushy in the last few days. When my concentration returns, I'll be there. However, I do want to share this lovely post by [livejournal.com profile] marenfic on Kara/Lee fans and our respective different views. I couldn't agree more. It's sad to see people sometimes torn apart by differences of perspective, but I am blessed with generous, intelligent LJ friends who enlighten me about Kara and respect that a Lee-fan's perspective is different.

And somewhat inarticulately I've been in a very 'Kara' kind of mood recently. I truly adored her in Razor--I thought she was at her strongest, most beautiful, most honourable and most heroic (in the good sense), and I've found that I'm gentler on her in my mind post-Razor. I do think Razor provided a missing puzzle piece for me re. Kara. That might not have been so if I was more naturally attuned to her, but regardless it's been a pleasant experience to find myself thinking about her perspective.

Consequently I've been drawn to Kara vids and wanted to share a couple:
- [livejournal.com profile] buffyann's Headlights explores her S3 destiny issues in a way that put me 'inside' that journey very effectively.
- [livejournal.com profile] dayln03's Surrender leant me a positive spin on Kara's feelings for Lee. And yes, it IS the shippiest song ever written, and I'm kind of amazed I 'bought' it as Kara pov (being such a cynic about Kara's feelings), but I really did which is a credit to the vidder.

Also have to rec [livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic's Ain't No Reason which looks at all the women in Razor, Kara included, but which worked most effectively for me as a study of Kendra. There's a stack of meta in there.

(The following are not BSG-specific links, btw!)

Finally, it's starting to be that festive time of year again and holiday wishlists are going up. [livejournal.com profile] wishlist_07 is a smart idea as a central way of posting wishlists. I usually mosey through them and do what I can, and it's a lot easier having a central archive. Go post there!

And there's a cool idea for a holiday vid exchange. I know lots of non-vidders have ideas for vids sometimes--if you leave them here you never know, someone might pick them up!
