Doctor Who 3.1

Doctor Who is back! While I don't usually post on Who, today's eppy warranted some major squee, I felt.

I need a Martha icon STAT! I LOVE HER. I really liked that she was contrasted to the whimpery girl who freaked out when they arrived on the Moon, and that she demonstrated her intelligence and unflappability immediately. And she has that all-important sense of wonder! She marvels at the beauty of the situation, wonders about how it could be possible, while also regretting missing her brother's twenty-first... she's wonderful! And she reassured the Doctor! She told him there had to be a way back to Earth. I love that she immediately constructs herself as the capable one. Which of course she is combining her medical skills, her deductive reasoning and her heroic nature to resuscitate the Doctor in the nick of time. \o/

She had chemistry with the Doctor even in the first scene where she listened to his heart(s). But I liked that she also didn't seem to be crushing on the Doctor in an annoying way (though his kiss left her breathless--yay!). And when he showed up again and ran through all the formalities with her super-fast (Time Lord, TARDIS, time travel, bigger on the inside... got it? Ok, let's go!), I was so squeeful. I liked her crazy family too, and how it's obvious that she's the level-headed one.

As usual, I loved Ten's mania: his impersonation of a daft human was hilarious. 'Laughing at the darkness' was a great call, and I liked that it was obvious that he was rushing to fill a Rose-shaped hole (despite his transparent protests to the contrary), but deliberately choosing differently this time.

In short, Martha's earned the title of Companion in my eyes. She's my kind of girl, and the Doctor's my kind of Doctor, and I think I'm going to love this season!

Martha's great isn't she? I really like her. Rose took sometime for me to warm up to. But by the end she was really rather tedious and I was glad to see the back of her because I could not stand her mother or Mickey.

*nods* I had similar feelings about Rose. I felt they had limited plots they could explore with her. Her family and Mickey never did much for me, so while I did like Rose, I also wanted to see the show work with a Companion who could open up more possiblities and I'm very optimistic that Martha's a good choice from what I've just seen.

Oh, haha, phew. God I was scared for a moment. XD; I've been waiting for new DW for ages and the thought that I'd missed it just threw me. Plus have you seen the TV guide for this week? There's hardly anything on, and most of what is on are repeats. D:< Crazy.

I've told myself not to download anything but anime/music and the occasional movie, so I still mostly have good viewing. (For example, on Wednesdays I usually get to see House, Medium, Heroes, Prison Break and 24. Which is slight overkill, but makes me happy. XD;) But this week just sucks. Hah.

I really liked Martha! I loved the looks Ten kept giving her throughout the episode, noticing that she was handling the situation better than everyone else.

In short, Martha's earned the title of Companion in my eyes. She's my kind of girl, and the Doctor's my kind of Doctor, and I think I'm going to love this season!

I can't wait to see what this season has to bring!

Yeah, I liked those looks too! And when he complimented her on her thinking about them trespassing on the moon: 'no, but good thinking! I like that!' It was obvious that the Doctor was 'shopping' for a Companion, but I'm fine with that and think she's a great choice. I'm so excited!

Can you image the scene if she ever brings the Doctor home? After her father left her mother for that crazy chick. Mwa ha. Oh the drama.

I know! Her family does seem insane. But it's good that there's a different family dynamic to that of Rose's family. And I loved her saving the Doctor. That was too wonderful!

Wasn't it just so good?? I loved Rose, but I really like Martha too, so I'm really excited for this season. I loved the Doctor mouthing "bigger on the inside," it was so cute.

I just smiled the whole way through, I was so happy it was back! :D

I'm glad I had faith in RTD regarding Martha, because I knew he'd pull it off. I adored Rose, but I like Martha a lot, too - and I'd honestly expected it to take a few episodes to get to that point. I think the coup de grace was her comment about the "tight suit". ;) I can't wait for next week.

I thought it might take me an episode or two too, but I found myself in near-instant love. I don't know the actress at all but I thought she showed good range in this episode and yeah, she was very cute when she was 'calling' the Doctor on chasing her around and acting all coy and alluring! ;-) I'm super-excited about the series now!

(And it's good timing with BSG just gone on hiatus.)

I haven't come across the actress either, but she fitted right in with the tone and flow of the show. And yes, I'm so glad Season 3 started now, as I was beginning to bite my arm off thinking of the dreaded 9-month BSG hiatus! :)

Thanks for your show overview! I have to say I agree with most of what you've said, though I was a bit wary - I couldn't stand Mickey or Rose's family but by about the middle of season 2 I was really enjoying the Doctor/Rose chemistry and I was sad to see her go. I wasn't sure how well I was going to like the new companion and was figuring it'd take me a while to warm to her - not so! I really liked her personally.

The story was a bit thin in my opinion, but as it's just the first of the season I'll look forward to it getting better. :)

Hi there! I agree the story wasn't the episode's strong point, but as a standalone establishment ep, I thought it worked well enough. I hope they'll get into some more interesting stories now that we've been introduced to the new Companion.

I LOVE Martha. She's just so awesome. Just instant love. I love the end scene with Martha's Theme playing over the top where she sees the Doctor again and the TARDIS for the first time.
