Comment Weekend post
Aug. 26th, 2006 05:19 pmI am busy imbibing caffeine in preparation for mainlining Six Feet Under with a friend who hasn't ever seen it. *rubs hands gleefully*
Meanwhile, the girls at
the_mas are holding a Special Edition Comment Day... Comment Weekend!

Comment Day nearly always prompts me to comment in journals I don't often comment in, or even find entirely new journals (and new friends) in which to do so--so if I suddenly appear out of nowhere with a random remark this weekend ... well, this is why! *dorks*
In support of this event (and because comments are, indeed, happyful-making!), I'm posting one of the memes that's been doing the rounds recently...
How many times has someone on your friends list posted about something and you were really confused, but you didn't want to ask because you knew you SHOULD know? How many times have you felt guilty asking a close LJ friend a question that should be obvious?
Well, here's your chance.
If you've missed a few things, missed an entry and are confused, ask me anything. Even something EXTREMELY basic, like where I live! I'm no tallowed to get even slightly irritated at any of the questions - we've all missed things before.

Date: 2006-08-26 02:24 pm (UTC)Question, ok. You do a lot of travelling - where's the furthest you've travelled?

Date: 2006-08-27 01:56 am (UTC)Hm... furthest I have travelled? From where? is the problem. ;-) I'm already damn far away! But I've also been to Perth (far-west Aus), Hobart (southern Tasmania) and then I've been to Tokyo, Scotland (obviously), Thailand, Greece, Portugal... um... does that answer the question at all?! Hee.

Date: 2006-08-27 01:57 am (UTC)You are ever so cute for asking.
Answer: I don't know. I think a fucked up childhood helped. ;-)

Date: 2006-08-27 03:32 am (UTC)I can't choose! So I'll give you a top ten...
1. Grosse Pointe Blank--it's a romantic comedy, which is SO not my genre--but I love it for its black humour, and it's a good rewatchable one.
2. Empire Records--again, unlikely for me, but I love this teen movie with its music-store-kids-beat-the-corporation plot--and I'm awfully fond of the various messed up characters. Another very rewatchable one.
3. The Lord of the Ringsmovies en masse--for setting a new standard in movie-making, for their originality and scope, and because the book is a favourite of mine.
4. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon--I love martial arts movies, and this not only was of the highest standard, but was also a visual feast.
5. Once upon a time in Mexico--for its over-the-top action-movie fun--a 'bad movie' I love to hate, with bonus Johnny Depp being offbeat and hilarious (his t-shirts in that movie are comic genius)
6. Sleepy Hollow--for its aesthetic, and for Johnny
7. Donnie Darko--for its darkness, humour and its exploration of mental landscapes
8. Devdas--the apex of Bollywood glory, with all its melodrama and beauty
9. The Princess Bride--yeah, I've got to do it! Classic of my childhood. 'Prepare to die!'
10. Amelie--It's just so damn charming and romantic! Great cinematography, too.
It seems I went for movies I actively enjoy, rather than the 'greats'. There are movies I think are absolutely brilliant (like Ken Loach's Land and Freedom) but I don't rewatch them, and they don't necessarily make for comfortable viewing.

Date: 2006-08-27 03:43 am (UTC)Interesting question, too!
I have to say it's Shattered, for several reasons:
1. It's integrity as an episode--unlike others, it focussed on one continuous plot, without too many distracting lame-B-plot events--consequently the tension in that episode was very strong.
2. For MR's performance (almost goes without saying)
3. For the shock on first viewing--I remember the first time how I couldn't believe what was actually happening (Lex seeing Clark use his powers, Lex being drugged and imprisoned)
4. For the Clex moment of victory ('You're either with me or against me!')
5. For the sense of inevitable impending doom--at its best, this is something SV does so well--the tension between unavoidable fate and what we desire to have happen (the 'happy ending' carrot). Shattered really bottled this feeling. All through it, I knew the plot arc wasn't going to end well--and yet I was compelled to keep watching in the hope that there would be a reprieve.
6. For the way it offers multiple readings--the first time I watched it I was completely 'in' Lex and found it so unfair of Clark to even waver from rescuing him for a moment. But now I love the episode just as much for how it shows us just how young Clark was--this was an incredibly challenging thing for him to face, and he so desperately wanted to do the right thing. The end of the plot arc (in Asylum) was a tragedy for both boys.
Having said that, it's not an episode I rewatch with ease! And shots from it (Lex in Clark's blue shirt!) I still find gut-wrenching.

Date: 2006-08-27 11:57 pm (UTC)I'm not really the clucky type, so even the cuteness of Tom holding a baby didn't do much for me.
The only redeeming feature of that episode was the explosion. Some part of me wishes to rewatch that ep to see if it's really as bad as I remember... but since I recall it feeling like torture the first time around, I've resisted this urge so far!
