Holiday Day 2
Oct. 23rd, 2007 10:18 pmDay 2 was a LOT better. *wipes brow* I saved myself some treats for these holidays, namely Dead Like Me Season 2 and the Season Eight BtVS comics.
LOVE this series. Love it! And season 2 feels even stronger than Season 1, or perhaps it's just that I've grown to love the characters so much. The show is smart without being too showy, entertaining without being 'cute', and George is just a marvellous central character--she's far more realistic a young adult than most teenagers on television, dead or otherwise. I still adore Reggie and I'm glad she's had lots of character development this season. Daisy also interests me and I liked her toying with religion. And, well, I love all the characters really. I like the office stuff too--good therapy for me at the moment, given that I'm escaping from my own cubicle hell. ;)
I've got four more eps to go and I kind of don't want it to be over so I'm dragging it out a little. The good news (for me) is that I have a vid bunny for this show, which means that I'll get to pour over the show in great detail at some stage. :) It has all sorts of cute visual moments to play with. Can't wait! *rubs hands*
Ok, so I need help! My comic store was all out of #1 and #3, so I'm flying blind a little here. Buffy's having nightmares (please tell me that Xander's head popping off was one of them!) and then Willow gets captured by someone? *frowns* I'm a bit vague on the plot details, but it was amazing how quickly I fell back into the BtVS world! So far I'm really loving Giles. And Faith! FAITH! I'm so glad she has a big part, though her undercover mission is a bit wtf. The idea of her in a ballgown is a surprise. But I love the plotline with her loyalties being tested. And wow, way to bring back the femslashy subtext!
.
Giant!Dawn amuses me. My old ambivalence about Witch!Willow returned. I really liked #5 The Chain, about the undercover 'Buffy'--very poignant. Oh, and how cute was the DW shoutout! :D
Much love for these, and I'm hooked now so will hunt down the missing issues and jump on new ones from now on.
Also I roasted a chicken (first time ever), washed my car and worked on two vids.

Date: 2007-10-23 01:33 pm (UTC)I so totally agree. I think DLM and FNL are the only two shows that depict teenagers realistically. Every other show depicts them as stupid, drunken, sluts/himbos. And not that there aren't teens like that, but there are some perfectly nice, well-adjusted ones as well.
And YAY! to the vid bunny. :)

Date: 2007-10-23 03:14 pm (UTC)I was ambivalent through the whole series but kept watching because the writing, acting, everything was great. Mostly kind of depressing.
After you finish, I'll have one more thing to say, but I don't even want to hint at anything so I'll :x.

Date: 2007-10-23 07:09 pm (UTC)Also, it's weird. The more time that passes since Buffy ended, the more I'm OK with the idea of Buffy and Xander getting together at some point. And I was a HARDCORE B/A shipper. That's weird, right?

It IS! Because I'm not ok with it! And I wasn't a big B/A shipper. I just don't like Xander very much... :p

Date: 2007-10-24 12:39 am (UTC)Also, it's been a long time since I've watched, but I agree that season 2 was even stronger than season 1. Sigh.
Did you know they're doing a straight to DVD movie of the series? There's no Rube and Daisy will be played by Sarah Wynter not Laura Harris, but Desmond from Lost is in it which should be fun.

Date: 2007-10-24 11:57 am (UTC)Dead Like Me is very charming--quirky and offbeat. Not as smartly written as BtVS or AtS but it's got a lot of heart and the character work is great.
Smallville... well, I love it to pieces but it's not the best-written show. ;) It is, however, very strong in terms of its exploration and use of iconography and visual metaphor, and it's ALL heart. It's also very pretty. :)
The comics are good, yes. The shift to the comic medium took a little to get used to, but they're definitely using them to good purpose--to explore plots that would be hard on TV.
