My fandoms

I hope you are thinking up prompts for the challenge! :D Full details/instructions will be posted on Saturday when I start accepting prompts, but if you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to drop me a line.

Personally I'm hoping to see lots of submissions from 'my' fandoms: Smallville and Battlestar Galactica. It's funny: I watch a lot of other shows and I interact with other fandoms quite often, but I still think of those two as my main fandoms. Anyway, I think there is HEAPS of potential for character studies in both fandoms, so this is my personal appeal to my f'list to think about participating. Remember, it doesn't have to be all earnest and serious--if you want to write a comedic character study (Gaius maybe? Shelby? *giggle*) or, for that matter, a porny one (I know [livejournal.com profile] mskatej can be relied on there!), then go for it! Newbie writers/vidders/artists are also very welcome!

Both my main fandoms have served up excellent examples of character studies in vid form this week.

For BSG, [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777 has posted rec lists of Kara vids and Lee vids. (I'm particularly excited about the Lee list! *predictable*)

And in Smallville news, [livejournal.com profile] capnzebbie has posted an incredible Lex vid: Put Your Lights On. From the song choice on, this is a vid I could never have imagined myself, and every moment of it felt like a revelation--there was not a predictable second. I find now that I'm vidding myself, I appreciate that even more in other people's vids. It's so easy to fall into predictable choices. Well, this vid carves out new ground, I believe. I've been dying to see some big Lex-as-villain vids, and this one puts his turn to the 'dark side' in context. I'm missing the show so much, and this brought all my love for Lex flooding back--even though it's a very dark vid.

I want to write something! Only my brain has turned to potato. Also it's been 13 weeks since I last saw a BSG episode. I'd like to write something one day about my "type" of pet character, except that it's all tangeld up with their prettiness, the acting, the situations and whether they get sucked into rubbish relationships. Also Lee doesn't fit the pattern because he is a Good Boy. Hmm.

Hee! You should totally write something, hon! Perhaps you will get inspired when you see the prompts. :) It doesn't have to be something huge. Little is just fine...

And that thingk on your kind of pet characters sounds brilliant. I've spent forever tracing where Lee fits in my scheme of characters I usually attach to. Lee is a Good Boy, but he's not validated for his goodness by anyone, I think, so that makes him more sympathetic to me. I want to rush to his defence, you know? (Also: pretty! *g*)

I think that the thing with Lee, for me, is that he *is* a good boy (but perhaps wanting *not* to be too good, as his grandfather suggested to him) but he has a real and tangible dark underbelly that he struggles with and that makes him so much more interesting for me. I just find him endlessly fascinating. Of course the fact that he is almost stunningly good looking is an added side benefit!

He's still struggling with that balance--where to find it and how to trust when he's got it 'right', isn't he? Lee follows his heart but he also likes structure and needs to be able to explain his decisions (to himself if noone else) logically, and I think that's where he gets caught up in constant internal conflict.

Your challenge seems so awesome and different. I'm totally tempted to participate but I FAIL at challenges so I'll be happy just waiting to see what everyone comes up with!

Now I'm off to check out this amazing Lex vid!

Hee! I usually fail at challenges too. But I hope this one will be 'easy': there will be loads of prompts which can be interpreted multiple ways and 3 weeks should allow some time, yes? And also anything goes--short or small entries totally ok too!

Thank you for mentioning my rec lists! Maybe there is a way for me to participate even though I can't create something myself.

I am really looking forward to your challenge!

I think your rec lists should be more widely known! ;) I have a feeling you will gradually get known for that--you are very good at it!

Perhaps you could REC things in the challenge. Like you could do a 'DB's favourites from the challenge' post or something...

I just wanted to pop on by and say HI! I haven't been online in the last week and I feel like I've missed so many things. I'm looking forward to reading the submissions. I think it's a great thing you're setting up.

It's good to see you around again.

I am not confident on my abilities within this challenge, but I am in the frame of mind to get my teeth into Lee (so to speak), so I am up for it.

Confidence in one's abilities is definitely not a prerequisite (at least not if I'm to take part myself!). Willingness is! So glad to hear you're interested! *g*

Thank you for the rec and the wonderful review, boppy! I'm so glad my vid touched you so much. Everything you've said about it makes me very happy! :)

I'm looking forward to the challenge--I don't know if I'll be able to participate, but I know I'll enjoy all the submissions. As soon as I saw the initial poll I thought, jeez, and here I have this character study and I CAN'T WAIT THAT LONG TO POST IT!!! *g* So I'll have to see if something in the prompts grabs me. Great challenge idea!

Hee! I must say it felt like wonderful synchronicity when I opened my f'list to find your vid on there! And no, of course you couldn't wait to post it! You never know, there may be a prompt or two in there to tempt... glad you think it's a good idea anyway! :D

I started writing a character study type fic a long time ago about Sam - your favorite character! - so I thought I might enter that one, since if I have a deadline I might actually finish it. So would "Sam Anders, post-Crossroads II" be a good example of a prompt? I've never done this before.

It would be a perfect prompt, yes! And what a great idea. :D I would totally read it.
