Lois picspam #1
Jun. 18th, 2007 09:16 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So I decided it was ridiculous that I'd never made a Lois picspam post. After all, I adore her, and she's purty, and I don't really need any excuse to natter away about how great she is. So I went off to collect some pics... that was two weeks' ago. *headdesk* Now I have 200 caps and don't know where to start. *lol*
So I'm cutting this down to size and I'm going to post 10 reasons Lois rocks every day for a week. Let's see if that'll get me through it... feel free to come with me on this journey, or not, as you wish. I'm just being self-indulgent. ;-)
Ten Reasons to Love Lois
1. She's a good samaritan.
She stops to pick up naked guys with memory loss who she finds wandering around in cornfields. She remains admirably calm while doing so too--ok, she has to talk to herself a little ('look at his face, Lois! look at his face!') but that's a trait I've always found cute and endearing.

2. She's fearless.
Few people can stare down Lionel Luthor, even when he is behind bars. But Lois with a mission is a match for anyone--and to have her cousin's killer brought to justice, she'd do anything.

3. Investigative journalism!
One of Lois's first 'assignments' involved pimping Clark off to a slutty cheerleader (remember how scared he was?!) in order to, er, pump her for information. It made sense at the time... maybe...

4. She's secretly ambitious.
I think Lois is a perfectionist. She has a huge fear of failure and she sets very high standards for herself. How does this fit with dropping out of school, you ask? Well, that's classic self-sabotage. She doesn't yet have ambition driving her, but she also can't deal with trying to do something and coming off second best, so she takes it all casually--doesn't matter if she screws up. But when Chloe encourages her to write for the school paper, she's secretly proud of the results. It was such a brief moment but I loved it:

5. Lack of boundaries.
I love Lois for some of the reasons other fans hate her. In Smallville private space is sacred. You don't barge into Clark's loft without asking (unless you're Lex or Lana, that is)... let alone the BATHROOM. Unfortunately (or fortunately!) Lois doesn't know these things. Whether it's social cluelessness or the fact that she grew up on military bases and travelled around a lot, she's very matter of fact about sharing her space with others. She's also charmingly unimpressed by Clark.

There be girls out there!

Lois seriously looks like she's enjoying getting sprung by Martha Kent. Hi Mom!

6. (With apologies to
serenography) She's as perplexed by Clana as many of us are.
But not for the reasons fans are. It's Lana who's too good for Clark in Lois's world.

You guys?! Really?!

7. She thinks Clark takes himself waaaay too seriously.
Oh, come on, he does! I adore him, and he's growing into a wonderful man, but all that angst and woobie-ing gets tiresome after a while--he could do with lightening up sometimes. And Lois does that well. Plus, she's fun meta for the viewer.

8. She's determined.
Once she's got an objective, she'll do anything to get to the truth. Whether it's climbing in graves to discover if her cousin's death has been faked...

or putting herself on the lab table (in Smallville terms, scary territory--few people go there voluntarily!) to get a story.

9. She likes to outman Clark.
Clark has his fair share of phallic symbols (many of them provided by Lex). Lois likes to play with them. 'Nuff said.

10. She's serious eyecandy. *stares*

Ah, the Smallville close-up: it's justifiably famous, though usually it's the male torsos getting this much attention.

More tomorrow! *g*

Best thing ever! It's even better when she actually is impressed by Clark.
Side note: I live about an hour from Metropolis, Illinois (where they have the superman statue and museum) and a couple of weeks ago Erica Durance was supposed to be at their annual superman festival. I so would have went and been a silly fangirl if she hadn't canceled at the last minute. :(

Oh no! I hate it when they cancel at the last minute. Booo! ED's been pretty good about going to such things--what a pity!

Date: 2007-06-18 12:38 pm (UTC)Superbly funny. I'm possibly still thinking of the Kara/Lee phallic symbols picspam, but I know I'll still be smirking about Lois handling Clark's phallic symbols later!
That "you guys? Really?" picture is just superb, and begging for iconage.

Superbly funny
Thanks! :D

Yay! There's more to come...
That "you guys? Really?" picture is just superb, and begging for iconage.
Hee! She actually said that on the show. I think that's when I fell in love with her. ;-) Well, one of the times... Erica's got such an expressive face--it's one of the things I think makes her Lois lots of fun. She's one of those actresses who's always doing little things to show you what's going on with her character.

Date: 2007-06-18 12:55 pm (UTC)Lois liked Lana from the start, even after knowing how Chloe felt about Clark, she never held it against Lana. More proof of awesomeness in my book. *two thumbs up*
Great idea, btw! A good Lois picspam is long overdue! Perhaps, after you conclude your series, I'll do a Lana one. Hell, I'd even like to see a Chloe one, she's had some awesome scenes too.
no subject
Date: 2007-06-19 05:32 am (UTC)I can see that. I do wonder if maybe I didn't mind that as much because I was a bit cranky with Clark around that time. ;-) Back then I was such a Lex apologist and also a bit frustrated with Clark being a slow developer. It might look different on revisit. ;)
But of course, the Lois/Lana scenes always make me happy - that one is especially cute. "Reeally?" LOL!
It was so cute! I love their meeting too--Lana saves Lois! Girl power! And like you I really love that the girls genuinely like each other. There will be more of that this week, promise! I already have a few good Lois & Lana caps picked out. *g*

Ohhh cool! That would be great, I think. All the girls need a bit more love from fandom. *g*

Something so very Freudian about that.

Date: 2007-06-18 03:35 pm (UTC)I found myself very intrigued by the following line you wrote:

Self-sabotage could be my middle name. And my parents are forever telling me I have no ambition, hence the reason I'm still in the "secretarial" bargaining unit after 7 years at my job.
no subject
Date: 2007-06-19 06:45 am (UTC)- self-sabotage
- avoidance (not trying so you won't fail)
- control (obsessive compulsion about things, or other control issues)
- what we've termed 'externalisation' which is kind of throwing all the issues onto the outside world and discussing all the ways that other people are not measuring up.
Most people seem to use a combo with one or more predominating. This is all completely observation-based--I've no idea how professional psychology characterises this.
But yeah, Lois seems to fit that mould.

1. She's a good samaritan.
Yes. It's one of the things that I genuinely like about many of the SV characters, the way they all help people. So it's nice that Lois fits in with the SV crowd in this way, while being so much of an odd duck in others.
2. She's fearless.
I love that scene with Lionel, and I love the way it paid off in S6, when Lionel was the only one who noticed her activities in "Noir," and the only one who took her seriously as a potential threat. She's made herself known to him, in a way that she hasn't to many of the others, and I love that. Lois certainly knows how to pick her enemies!
4. She's secretly ambitious.
I'm with you on the self-sabotage thing. I once had a college professor explain this to me — it's an extremely common reason for procrastination. If you don't put your whole heart into it, you have a built-in excuse for not scoring the A, or being the best in class. "Oh, that B could have been an A, but I wrote it in an all-nighter, the day before it was due..." She pointed out to me that it'smuch more common among people who can write a B-worthy college-level paper the night before it's due — which goes a long way toward convincing me of Lois's natural talent.
5. Lack of boundaries.
Lois is a bull in a china shop. And what's even better is that she knows this about herself. She even refers to it as "pulling a Lois."
7. She thinks Clark takes himself waaaay too seriously.
Yes, a thousand times. Clark needs someone to needle him, to jostle him out of his funks. And he's going to need it even more when he's all grown up and wearing tights and the whole world really is on his shoulders.
And I love that Lois so mystifies him. She doesn't talk to him like anyone else he's ever known, and it's just... confusing, damn it!
9. She likes to outman Clark.
And speaking of prefiguring, I love that whole tie scene. It's so domestic, and she's so proprietary about it.
10. She's serious eyecandy. *stares*
She's gorgeous. As you said above, 'nuff said.
I love that you're doing this. I look forward to tomorrow's installment!

Date: 2007-06-19 06:07 am (UTC)*nods* SV payoffs are slow but they're cool when they come! And that was a great follow up. Lex may not 'rate' Lois, but Lionel sure knows she's an adversary to watch.

Yes! That's exactly the phenomenom I'm thinking of. A lot of people think perfectionists are always the kids that score well in school. It's not true. There are a lot of bright kids out there self-sabotaging. It's especially true of those who were praised for being intelligent as children. There have been studies done showing that kids that are praised for working hard (rather than innate trait of intelligence) actually succeed at harder tasks better than the kids praised for being intelligent. As soon as something feels 'hard' to the latter group, they think they'll fail and aren't as persistent.
what's even better is that she knows this about herself. She even refers to it as "pulling a Lois."
Yeah, I love self-awareness in a character. *g*

True! I might have to use that in one of the later picspams... ;)

Love your point about Lois as a perfectionist. Never thought of it that way, it does make sense.

Date: 2007-06-18 06:56 pm (UTC)I agree with your assesment of Lois as a perfectionist. In my opinion, there are two true perfectionists on SV: Lois and Lex and that's totally in line with these characters in every incarnation.
no subject
Date: 2007-06-19 05:42 am (UTC)I agree, and it makes interactions between them very interesting, though the show hasn't given us much of that. Superficially they are polar opposites, but they share some key characteristics underneath. I always found Lucy an interesting ep since they paralleled Lois and Lucy with Lex's absent sibling/surrogate brother in Clark.

Date: 2007-06-18 07:14 pm (UTC)Ok, here's the thing: now that I, um, *cough*dontwatchSVanymore*cough* I've grown nostalgic for Lois. And also, I have no problem in realizing most of my issues with her was that she stood in the way of my OTP. Maybe not ALL of my issues, but a lot of them. I... kinda like her. HEEEE! *is amused at own self*
