I'd like to thank everyone who has participated / is participating in the discussion in my post about inclusion and exclusion in vidding fandom. I would like to acknowledge that it's not an easy topic to discuss, and I think overall it's been a very positive (if emotionally draining!) conversation.

I also apologise for conflating approximately 100 different issues into one post--that was not ideal, although it was kind of awesome to see people identify with lots of separate parts! I still feel a bit overwhelmed by the responses but I'm making this post in the spirit of moving forward, especially since I personally find myself in a very different emotional place after the post than before. And you'll see that a great deal of this post is framed personally, because... well it always was a deeply personal post/subject, though definitely one I hoped would be constructive for others in the community and the community as a whole.

PS. If I'm slow to respond it's because I still have Work Crisis, not because I hate you or am a snob. :)

AMV recs

Memo to self: don't break your silence about vidding fandom in the middle of a work crisis.

I've got a backlog of comments, as I'm sure you understand, and have barely managed to step off my own LJ in the last day or two, but it's been a wonderfully rewarding conversation, both personally, and hopefully for the community I love as well. :)

I plan to make a follow-up post in a few days, when things are a little calmer, as lots of interesting suggestions and ideas have come out in the comments.

Some commenters discussed AMV and possible differences with vidding. As an extension of that discussion, [livejournal.com profile] supacat has posted some recs of different types of AMVs to address stereotyping. Even if you're not interested in the wider discussion, I highly encourage you to check out the vids if you don't know them already--they are all AMAZING. I know it is an extra step, but it really is worth registering at AMV to download (and it's not that harder than having to ask a vidder for a password to a protected site, right?).

*goes back to the backlog*

I've been composing this post in my head for a long, long time. Months. But it's come to a head for several reasons. I've held back from making it because I thought it was just 'my' issue and because I have a great deal of love and respect for the Livejournal/VVC-centred vidding commmunity/fandom, both as a whole and the individuals who make it up.

The specific trigger for this post is [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro's post on race, gender and accessibility--my thanks to her for making it, even if I don't agree with all that is said. While my post is not specifically about race or gender, it touches on both issues. It is. however, deeply personal, and I'm aware of that. This is my own personal view and I don't expect anyone to agree with me.

I've become increasingly uncomfortable about the politics of inclusion and exclusion within the community, and specifically at Vividcon. You might say I have no right to speak about Vividcon because I have never attended. That is true. I am told it is wonderful, and I believe that. I am told everyone is lovely. I believe that. That doesn't stop the institution being problematic.

These are my five things I wish that LJ/VVC-based fandom would remember. I use 'we' in this post, throughout, because for better or worse and whether other people accept me or not I consider myself part of this community and I am as much of the problem as anyone else.

1. We're not the only vidding tradition. Read more... )

2. Vidding is by its nature a privileged act. Read more... )

some further observations on vidding fandom )

I think that's quite enough from me, don't you? ;)

ETA: It may be too late to ETA with this, but since this post is about inclusion/exclusion and issues of silencing in fandom: if you don't feel able to speak publicly about this issue but wish to talk to someone about the issues, you are welcome to PM me or email me at bopradar at Gmail dot com.

Stolen from the f'list. Since I'm not actually vidding, I may as well talk about it!

After many months of absence, vid chats return! This one's at the request of [livejournal.com profile] chaila43 and [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777, and is on the topic of commenting on vids. We're particularly interested in the process of commenting on vids when you're not used to it.

a little introduction )

Questions
So to spark discussion, here are some questions about commenting for people to reflect on. They're by no means 'compulsory'--feel free to respond to them or more generally on the topic, as you wish.

Links
This topic has been extensively discussed elsewhere, and [livejournal.com profile] vidding's memories section contains some great links. Among them:
[livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup's Vid Feedback 101
[livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r's thoughts on the hesitance of non-vidders to comment
[livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine's On reccing vids (reccing is a whole other topic, really, but it's a great post)

As a counterbalance to this obsession with comments: [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine's genius Why aren't people commenting? post--which I recommend all vidders keep bookmarked. ;)

Aside
Hijacking this post to pimp a couple of recent vid-related posts:
- For the lolz: vidding anthem
- There's much discussion of streaming platforms at the moment. Personally I'm trying out BAM vid vault. Helpful links: here and here.

So I'm delurking myself briefly to pimp [livejournal.com profile] vid_commentary.

I'm having trouble posting about anything these days, so I'll just say briefly that I think it's the best idea for a community I've seen for ages. I love reading people's in-depth ideas about vids, and I look forward to reading the commentaries there in July.

I've signed up, and I think the idea of watching a vid that closely, and being 'allowed' to do so visibly, is fantastic. I hope non-vidders sign up too! I remember when I was non-vidder I was so hesitant writing my thoughts about vids. I think lots of people are scared, thinking there is stuff they don't 'get' about vids... but as a vidder I know how much it means to get even one sentence from someone else's perspective saying what they saw in your vid. And I know I'll be really interested to see what other vid viewers see in different vids. I think it may make the process of vid-watching and the relationship of the viewer with the vid a little more visible and accessible. At least that's what I'm in it for! This seems positive.

I am currently working my ass off at my new job (LOVING it) and vidding in what little spare time I have, so I may be a bit quiet on LJ for a while. Between full-time editing, uninterrupted by admin or work politics (yay!), and one of the most intellectually challenging vids I've ever made, I'm finding myself mentally drained at the end of the day.

It is a good feeling.

I'm sure I'll be back soon though.

I found this episode abysmally boring. Where's Lois? )

Confession: I have a ridiculous number of WIPs. I'm beginning to think I may never actually finish a vid ever again. some introspective blather about the state of my vidding )

I have never done this before, but I am offering to vid to raise money for the bushfire appeals. I will ask the highest bidder to make a donation to either the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal or the RSPCA Bushfire Appeal (if you prefer to help animals).

In return, I will make a vid of your choosing in one of the following fandoms:
- Smallville
- Battlestar Galactica
- Sarah Connor Chronicles
- Friday Night Lights.

My previous vids can be viewed here.

I have screened comments and will edit this post regularly so it contains the current highest bid (assuming there are any!). This auction will remain open until midday Saturday 14th February, Melbourne time (that's Fri 2am London time, 9pm NY time).

Please remember: if you live in Europe or the US, your currency will go a long way here in Australia. Even a small donation will go a long way, so please bid if you can.

Obligatory tear-jerky photo:

(I couldn't face putting up a photo of the devastation--you can find them easily yourselves. Also this image may be cute, but this koala must be very distressed to let someone touch it like that.)

If you have any questions, please comment or message me. Any promotion of this post gratefully received.

CURRENT HIGHEST BID: $200 US ($305.30 Australian)--WOW!
AUCTION CLOSED

So, short story: I've signed up for an 'Insane February Vidding Project', with [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777, [livejournal.com profile] chaila43 and [livejournal.com profile] taragel. We've each set our own goals, depending on what we want to work on, but the idea is that we create a series of vidlets quickly, to push our comfort zone into new areas.

I chose to focus on effects, to see whether it made any difference to my vidding long-term. So my goal is to learn 10 new things (and demonstrate them as proof!) in two weeks. EEP!

Excitingly, I've got off to a good start by learning about keyframes. FINALLY! They're so easy! I'm so embarrassed now. ;) So I got to playing around with 'scale' and 'centre' in Motion, and I put in a fade to white transition for kicks... Here's all 4 secs of it!

This is a speculative vid chat. Or a pre-vid-chat post. I feel a bit sheepish calling it a proper vid chat because it's a very personal post, but at the same time, I'd love other vidders to feel they could share their own experiences with these issues, and since I want to start vid chats up again this year, I thought I may as well just leap in.

I have a confession to make: I have a creative block when it comes to effects. )

Aka, my second year of vidding. I'm kind of sliding two posts into one here, as
This was my post for 2007, and my post about my first year of vidding.

cut for self-reflection )

I should have remembered that fandom 'lows' often come right before the highs... in this case I have bounced back from my slump with something to celebrate. And while I am shy, I'm also too euphoric about this not to share. (And also I *do* think everyone should 'own' their successes when they have them--even though I usually suck at doing so myself.)

[livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett was asked to do a follow-up to her New York Magazine feature last year, by choosing 5 of her favourite 2008 vids to feature in a year-end round up. And she chose Clint Eastwood among them!

Honoured doesn't begin to cover it. It is tremendously exciting to see one of my vids alongside vids from some of my own personal vidding idols. All the vids and vidders featured are amazing and you should totally check them out.

I feel like I'm living a fannish fairytale! :D cut for squeeful rambling and thank yous )

Recently I've been having a lot of lengthy and very rewarding conversations about vids and vidding with various LJ friends (some vidders, some vid-watchers). Mostly these conversations have been one-on-one by email or IM, and since I've been discovering that there are other people out there who want to have similar discussions and who have a lot of interesting insights, I started thinking about providing an informal forum for this on LJ.

further explanation beneath cut )

[livejournal.com profile] daybreak777, my partner-in-crime in this idea, has made a preliminary poll for all vid-watchers and vidders, to find out if you are interested in participating but also to find out if you're not, then why not: Are you too shy? Too busy? Not interested?

I'll bear the results in mind in picking early topics, but for this week, I simply ask: what do you think? Are you interested? Do you have any reservations? What would make it work (or not work) for you?

Any/all thoughts welcome. :) Help us find the words!

My Vividcon supporting membership pack came today! \o/ It was very exciting to see the program with my name in it. *pats ego* I may have bounced and pointed.

And now I have EVEN MORE vids to watch. *happy sigh*

Of course, it would arrive on the day I got better enough to return to work. *headdesk*
bop_radar: Boppy default (Default)
I am hopelessly sniffly at the moment, thanks to a pesky cold that descended on me on the last day of a long weekend. It's been hard to take time off work (I've got some really high maintenance authors at the moment) but today I couldn't string long enough between sneezing fits to actually drive to work, so I've been at home watching 30 Rock, which, may I say, is perfect sick-person TV.

In my efforts to catch up on Vividcon vids I've been kind of OD-ing on great vids to add to the backlog of recs I already had to make. But a few standout favourites I must rec straight up are:

- [livejournal.com profile] mranderson71's This Is Matrix Life, a total must-see. It has comedy, slick moves (from vidder as well as in source!) and the perfect marriage of source + song.

- [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro's Shut Up and Drive--the best Martha (of Doctor Who) vid I've seen, and that girl definitely deserves kickass vidding!

- [livejournal.com profile] keewick's Sorry is a sequel to last year's 'Sugar', the Lana vid that I loved so much. And I'm delighted she revisited Lana here to explore the later season material. (There's also a snazzy Gossip Girl vid and some SGA goodies I haven't checked out in that post.)

- Not strictly a Vividcon vid, I think, but if you missed it in July's International Day of Femslash, [livejournal.com profile] charmax's I'm Your Man showcases an exceptional number of sources, in a documentary of femslash set to music (it really reminded me of 'Celluloid Closet').

All the great vids mean I've got vidding on the brain at the moment (what brain is left behind the cold) so I have a couple of questions for other vidders of the 'is this just me or a common phenomenon?' kind )

Paranoid Android feels like a milestone in my history as a vidder. I learnt so much in making it, both about vidding and about the show (Smallville) and the character (Lex). Originally I was going to post notes about the vid with the vid, but I decided against this for two reasons:
1. I didn't want to impose my own reading of the vid on viewers.
2. I realised I had a lot more to say than could be justified as just 'notes'.

So for those who are curious, this was my journey with 'Paranoid Android'. discussion is spoilery for all episodes, since 7.20 'Arctic' footage is used in the vid )

Guess who I saw play my favourite venue this week, [livejournal.com profile] snarkist?! Sufjan! It was absolutely brilliant. report on the important stuff--like hula hoops )

Right now I'm watching Roger Federer play Tipsarevic, and I'm fretting coz it's gone into a fourth set. Federer's my favourite player on the men's circuit, and I desperately want him to win this year's Open--I know it means a lot to him, since he's so adorably respectful of the Australian tennis tradition. Come on, Roger! Don't fret! (He looks fretty! :() Phew, he broke serve. *wipes brow*

[livejournal.com profile] counteragent is running a new-to-me vid-watching challenge this coming week. The challenge is to watch a new vid (preferably from a vidder you don't know) every day for a week from 21-28 Jan. I've signed up. Anyone wanna join me? :D

Also, if you haven't yet seen [livejournal.com profile] counteragent's tribute to vidding, Destiny Calling, then you're missing a meta-y treat. And it features some of my favourite vids! :D

ETA: WOW, what a match! And aww, he's such a gent.

... I think I might be getting my life back again. It's Day 2 of having my boss back again (and therefore no longer being boss-person myself) and I'm on cloud 9. I LOVE HAVING A BOSS!!! *bounces* And to make this fandom-related... I think I finally get why Kara didn't care that much about being CAG. Because hello, it is WAY more fun to be the slightly loud-mouthed and rebellious offsider than the guy that has to do all the paperwork and answer for shit at the end of the day. :D And yeah, I may seem diplomatic online but in real life? Huahahaha, no. I have an unfortunate habit for telling the truth in meetings and a low tolerance of idiots--this does not get you far in management, I have found.

So what's going on round here?! :) I missed stuff! I owe some people mail--and I promise I'm working on it. My inbox is kinda scary... *guilt*

I do have some posts to pimp though. I'm always a big fan of people focusing on what they like and not what they like to whinge about... and in that spirit, I have really enjoyed:
- [livejournal.com profile] asta77's post on why she loves Lee Adama
- [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_'s post on why she loves Kara Thrace
- and [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777's post on falling for the Kara/Lee ship.

Also, Kara/Lee fans who haven't read this extremely hot fic by [livejournal.com profile] elzed are missing a treat. *g*

I feel kinda bad not having anything SV-related to pimp... but seriously, people, is there anything out there?!

Oh, and before I forget, I apologise to anyone who tried to dl my new vid the other day when the link wasn't working. I have fixed it now. And I'm even feeling thick-skinned enough (or stupid enough) to stick my name up on the vidding truth meme so if anyone feels inclined to tell me where my weaknesses are or how I could improve... pipe up. :) I do appreciate that it takes time and care to give people proper concrit, so if anyone does, I'll be very grateful.
