Yes, I think it does come down to what people find personally more horrifying. For me, it wasn't Lex's rage-fit that was the final straw for me. It was him requesting Duncan's lab notes afterwards. That implies no remorse for his actions against someone he was once personally attached to. I have understood for some time that Lex had a cold enough personality to be able to view others as objects. But I still thought that personal attachment would stop him from treating people he knew this way. This proves otherwise. He's basically happy to rape his old friend's brain for knowledge--and that is worse to me, because it shows he has a capacity to close off emotionally even from people he once loved. (i.e. Clark, as you pointed out above) Sounds like Lex crossed that line with you a lot earlier! He crossed it earlier still for supacat. So I do think it's a deeply personal thing.
