Fires update: the smoke around Melbourne has cleared. The fires continue to burn, but the wind isn't blowing hte smoke over the city any more. The fires have claimed a few lives, much property and 680, 000 hectares. They'll burn for a few more weeks. By Wednesday or Thursday we'll be back in extreme conditions--temps in the high thirties and northerly wind bringing the emergency levels up high. On the plus side, they've had a few days to backburn and strengthen containment lines. But it looks like the fight will continue right through Christmas and into the new year.
Water rage: the state government has FINALLY put us on Stage 3 water restrictions. ABOUT FRAKKING TIME! I am rarely ragey at my labour government, but in this case I think the opposition's claims that the restrictions were delayed until after the elections are more than justified. This is a horrible case of city-elite versus rural-poor: some country towns have been on Stage 4 (essentially water rationing per person) for some time now. Stage 3 in the city is the least we need! Arrrgghhh. So I'm going to be watching my city dry up this summer: no pools or spas and we're only allowed to water gardens twice a week, which essentially means they'll be parchment-dry in a couple of weeks time. At least then people might comprehend the severity of the situation...
Speaking of which, our PM has finally grudgingly admitted that global warming may not be a complete fallacy. He was kind enough to reveal this to the victims of Tasmania's bushfires, telling them to be stoic and expect 'more conditions like this in the future'. Great. *death stare*
Despite all this, I am in good spirits leading up to Christmas. My workplace is loopy and I may be doing the job of three people in the new year, but right now all I can do is laugh and shrug andsurf LJ hope for the best. I can't wait for the week off over Christmas so I can vid and watch movies and laze with some good books.
