I think I sort of understand it with teens, but on the other hand it worries me that it's so massively popular because I think the romantic tropes that you hook into as a teen can be very influential in your development and that one is NOT HEALTHY, yo! I'm almost less disturbed by adults if they like it in a 'I like this as a kink' kind of thing and are self-aware about the gender politics. To me they read as barely disguised Mills and Boon novels so I do see why women like them--I just ... that was never my thing. ;)
