I'm also using the verb 'to heart' a lot today. *frowns* The things fandom's done to me!
Thank you to
clari_clyde and the Anonymouse who gifted me turkeys. They are so cute!
I'm in an unexpectedly chirpy mood today. Possibly because I'm absolutely delighted by the response so far to
bsg_hiatusthon's first challenge. 93 prompts and 12 days already snagged by people signing up! :D I need to stop dithering and sign up for one myself. Much credit must go to
siljamus who has a real flair for organisation. If you're at all curious, please check out the fantastic range of prompts prompts and consider signing up.
I'm also in a self-revelatory mood today, apparently. I think some of you know I have insomnia and nightmares sometimes? Well last night was truly one of the worst (and yet funniest) nightmares ever. This dream managed to combine so many anxiety-triggers for me. I was in an airport somewhere in Asia (KL probably) on the way to Europe and I had three hours to kill before my flight. The boredom was absolutely unbearable (there were no books), so I thought I'd see a movie (there was a cinema in the airport). I get in queue for a ticket but there's only one film showing and the lady warns me that it's very violent. I give her a 'yeah-sure-k' grin and buy a ticket. Then she says 'oh, it's also two and a half hours long and non-refundable'. As I'm ushered into the theatre, I'm desperately trying to calculate how long I've been in the queue, how long the previews will take and whether this means I'll miss my connecting flight...
I'm still jittery about that as the film starts and this anxiety is a backdrop to what follows, which is the film. It's a remake of the pilot of Smallville. Except without the gay or happy bits. The entire aesthetic is different--all the colours are muted with this kind of sickened dark tone. It still looks like Kansas, but as if you're watching through a darkgreen-grey tinted lens. It's creepy and ominous. And of course everything else is a bit 'off' too. The script chose to focus heavily on Jonathan (nightmare!) who was played by someone who totally looked like a serial killer. Shelby was already in it but he looked liked he had rabies. And there was an entirely new sub-plot in which Lana had a cousin called Gwendolyn who Lex was suspected of murdering. The real horror factor got scaled up for me when Lana made her entrance: she was played by Keira Knightly (who totally makes my skin crawl).
At this point in time it became apparent that my mother was in the cinema beside me (dream logic!). She proceeded to embarrass me publicly by exclaiming throughout the movie. Her first such exclamation was 'this Lana is crap!' and I shushed her and told her people might be offended (hee! fandom ansgt ate my brain!). I then sat there valiantly trying to like this Lana myself though I thought she was as painful and inappropriate as I always find Keira Knightly (who disturbingly shares the same initials as the other KK!).
Btw there was no Clark in this movie. NIGHTMARE!
For unexplained reasons one third of the way into the movie, the plot was completely hijacked by constant gratuitous violence in high-resolution close-up. And in true nightmare fashion I could neither move from my chair or close my eyes. Or shut up my mother who persisted in exclaiming 'omg, are they sawing that man's leg off?!; and other such gems for the next couple of hours.
The climax came with Superman, who was played by a really old dude who looked a little like Abraham Lincoln, making a press statement at the end of the bloodbath. The movie was quite ambiguous and open to interpretation but there was some implication that Superman was actually the one who'd orchestrated the killings to build himself a position of power. Perhaps it was the fact that his podium was built of bodies that was a giveaway... *shudders*
All in all (preponderance of evil!Jonathan, Keira Knightly, Superman-as-massmurderer) it was the worst episode of Smallville EVER.
I did that enneagram meme that's doing the rounds. I was surprised with my result (I'd never call myself romantic!) but all the descriptions are accurate--the childhood ones freakishly so.
Thank you to
