I just... they destroyed 3 ships in one swoop for me.
Clana. Gone.
Clex. Gone. (the absurdity of Lex being killed by a monkey toy and Clark's ridiculous meaningful Lex!dust moment has forever scarred the Grand Destiny)
Basically, they made it so that the only reason Clark and Lana aren't together is because he'll die if they stay too close (Lana had to absorb Kryptonite). Which would make any other relationship moves Clark might make this season feel completely like a rebound and like he's only doing it because he can't have Lana. Especially since they have Lana the one walking away and Clark the one begging her not to.
I just... it seems to stupid and short-sighted for them to do that to Clark's character (who, of course, has regressed to a pre-S8 state in everything involving Lana).
Kate, it is SO MUCH WORSE when played out on your screen! Nothing could have prepared me. The show didn't even LOOK like the usual show. *cries*
I can't ever get over this. And me, completionist who I am, is SERIOUSLY considering bailing on the rest of the season. It's not my show any more and nothing will redeem this.
From all possible ways to get rid of the Clana, they picked the worst one. Again! *headdesk*
But, I have to give them credits for destroying all characters; from the show, and from the Superman universe. And amazingly, it's all because of Lana.
Oh, and Oliver and his "it's no murder but justice"-speech and emotionally abusing Chloe? HATE! Big time! Are TIIC still trying to sell him off as one of the good guys on this show?
I admire Michael Rosenbaum for leaving the show and refusing to come back, or give them a voice-over. He must have some pretty good working scrying glass at home.
They did indeed destory ALL characters and all ships, just about.
Personally I found Chloe's completely inconsistent characterisation more annoying that Oliver's out-of-character plot (because I don't like them scripting him as Lex's killer either)--Chloe has advocated that Clark kill Lex!!! Do the writers even watch the show?!
Good on MR for turning this shit down. It was TOTALLY disrespectful to his character and I can't believe they wrote it. The Lex parts were almost the worst for me and that's saying something considering they killed Clana and Clois in the same episode....
Truly it reached some new kind of hideous low. I am actively ASHAMED to be a fan at a whole new level to the sheepish-love-for-adorable-but-batshit show kind of love I've had til now.
Yeah, I watched this and 15 minutes in I thought, Bop's going to reject this one. I almost did too, and damn if they didn't make me misty by the end. You know I can't take Clark crying even if the entire plot is ridiculous and I know the writers are manipulating me. He's gets this hurt look in his eyes and then . . . :-( Then Lana started crying too and I was surprised I still cared but I do still love her a lot despite her bad wig and bad storyline that revolves all around Clark. And his that now revolves around losing her. And the fact that they broke up again, when they broke up for good reasons last season so why, again?
I did consider snapping off the TV but I've learned from you and other SV people to handwave. It's Smallville and I'm supposed to be watching it for the pretty and not the cartoony villians with dolls. So I did that. But the last few weeks have been some odd retreads. Why kill Lex again? Why have Clana break up again? Do the writers think we weren't watching the first time? Or maybe as you say, they weren't watching last season. Very, very strange show.
Rant away, it's good for the soul. I think I have tiny ranty feelings brewing but mostly about my ship. I'm sure I can be stirred into further rantiness, though!
This was bad on a new level of epic badness never before seen, even for Smallville. Like you say, the retreads... I swear the writers either a) don't watch b) don't care c) are deliberately fucking with the show because they hate it.
I feel like crying after what they did to Lex, Chloe, Oliver, and Clark
And after years of setting Clana up for parting for actual reasons relating to their relationship, they may as well have just written Clana as happy true love for the past 7 seasons because the only reason they split was for external reasons. I can't even *head meet desk*
Yeah, same. They destroyed our characters. I feel I'd add Lana and Lois to the list, just personally. (Lois, in absentia, but I'd already been upset about her writing this season)
because the only reason they split was for external reasons. I can't even *head meet desk* Yeah. What...? What was that? It renders everything pointless. I'm still in some degree of disbelief.
One thing is that this ep seems to be a great equaliser: I'm seeing fans of all characters upset. Why? Because they character assassinated nearly all of them in one ep.
uhm, i am really bad at comforting people, let alone friends, but *hugs boppy*
maybe its better, if you think of SV canon just a canon from an AU universe?
like nothing to do with the comics, or with the movies and the other show? I really liked the new adventures of lois and clark. and well, in my mind, in that universe, lois is like the first true love of superman, and will forever remain so.
I guess I do view SV canon a bit independently already, but even if it's totally independent... why would ANYONE write this?! *weeps*
It's not just the Clana/Clois. I am wildly upset about what they did to Lex and to Oliver and to Lana as a character on her own. And all of that reflects back on Clark too. :((
I went into denial too. MASSIVE denial. That was the world's most sucktastic end for Lex Luthor. I have to believe the writers actually hate the show and think it's a joke and are deliberately f'ing with it.
I was dreading the whole Lana arc, but it has proved to be MUCH worse than I could have ever anticipated! And this episode was so WRONG on so many levels!
I really don't understand what these writers and producers were thinking. Did they really believe they were doing a good job? Unless they wanted the faithful fans, who have been watching for eight years, to hate the show, I don't know what they pretended with this episode. If their goal was to ruin the characters and every good thing they had accomplished this season, then they have succeeded.
What a waste, what a shame, and what a disservice to the characters and to us!
SO much worse! Oh, I can't believe it. I am in actual shock. Yes, they did everything they could to turn the faithful fans against the show. I keep thinking of new ways in which this messes with all the canon they've established to date. None of it works... for ANY of the characters. I just feel like these were not 'my' characters that I was watching last night.
I've got to write more about this because I'm so angry.
I can't decide whether it's worse because it's completely unbelievable that it's their LAST BREAKUP EVER, as opposed to all the other LAST BREAKUP EVERs, or whether I'm willing to believe that no, this one is for real, seriously.
It's totally their LAST EVER BREAKUP... unless Lana finds a way to pull the Kryptonite out of her system. She does that, you know she'd go back. So that she and Clark can manage to break up in yet another ridiculously contrived way in the future.
I agree, Boppy. This has truly been the first time Smallville has disappointed me with an episode, as I always try to play Devil's Advocate with the writers..I am just wondering why they went the direction they did after having so many OTHER outlets that they could of had gone through..don't even get me started on Oliver and his actions..*headdesk* A plus though-I loved the Toyman character from the comics..well played and acted. Another plus..Lois WILL be back..and SOON...
I really admire your attempt to find a silver lining, but just personally, I don't WANT Lois to come back to this show. They will just (continue to) ruin her too. That's how I feel right now, sorry.
OH PREACH IT SISTER. Last night's episode was just HORRIBLE. Horrible. On so many, many levels. (And didn't it even feel like a little bit boring underneath everything? Like so incredibly non-epic for an episode where they fucking kill everyone off and character assassinate them all? I mean why did we need to waste time on the guy with the doll. What was that even about?)
I felt like all the huge decisions were made in like two seconds. Oh Lana has to become human kryptonite? Um...two seconds later...ok! Sure! Let's do it.
We need to kill Lex?...two seconds later...Why not! So what that Ollie was never a villain before.
Chloe is completely just frigging OFF. Just more unlike Chloe than she's been in ages. And this is post-Brainiac so what fucking gives?
This show, man. I don't even like it much and I'm ranting. (And where is my boy Davis? Can we go get him out of the ice coma now since he's the only thing worth watching on this entire season? Pls?)
I have no idea how they're going to wrap this shit up but I kind of just hope they go whole hog and have Doomsday annihilate them all.
HORRIBLE. And yes, totally BORING to boot. It had the feel of a cheap daytime soap to me. You know, the kind of 'duh duh DUHN' plots and slow moving nonsense.
And yeah, the last bit was waaaaaay too fast. Character annhiliation in three minutes...
Chloe managed to be inconsistent within the one episode on a scale never quite seen before. I've seen her written inconsistently from one ep to the next, sure, but in this it was within conversations...
I'll bat for Doom now! DEF'LY! Where the hell is he? I reckon he didn't want to lower himself by participating in this crap. (Like MR!)
Retrospectively SO WISE. I'd settle for having stopped at the end of Season 7. But I'm seriously regretting Season 8. For the couple of good elements in it, there is NOTHING that can make up for this.
In the beginning (see the Pilot), Clark yearned for Lana but she was kryptonite to him. Eight years later (see this episode), Clark still yearns for Lana but she is kryptonite to him.
Eight years just to get back to the same starting place. :flabberghasted: Was this just a waste of my time? I could watch the stock car races go around and around the same old track and go further than this.
And Lex is DEAD? DEAD? All those times that Clark rescued him (and Kara rescued him) from death, Lex still ends up DEAD. Only later instead of sooner. Lex could have just died in the Pilot.
What was the meaning of this show? That all is Garbage?
All those broken toys in the Toyman's Toy Chest. All these broken characters in Smallville. These writers are too ironic and clever by half. They forgot to tell a good story.

Nail. On. Head. I said on another board that the writers were too interested in writing and doing clever metaphors in this episode that to actually write the characters consistently with actual, logical character growth and development. "Mature breakup for Clark and Lana? No, that's too boring! Lets play around with and redo the kryptonite metaphor from the Pilot episode instead!"
I was never much of a Lana fan, but I actually really wanted her to come back and was looking forward to her final arc. And this is what I got. *angry*
I wouldn't say the whole season has been ruined for me, but it did make pointless everything I loved about season 8 up until now. It was like all that progress was for NOTHING, especially wrt Clark. *grr*
I want Lois to now stay the hell away from Clark. Thing is though (and this isn't a spoiler, so don't worry) I have a sneaky suspicion that she will stay away from Clark and start focusing on the Red and Blue Blur, which is going to be PS3's oh-so-little-clever way of starting the "classic" chase. Whatever - I don't want Lois falling for the Red and Blue Blur either since I know it's Clark.
It took PS3 - in two episodes - to do something Al & Miles were never able to do in seven years: convince me that Clark Kent and Lana Lang are meant to be together. Clark is so masochistic when it comes to her, and they both are just so co-dependent they deserve each other IMO. Just keep Lois out of and far away from it.
I was a Lana fan and I am so sorely disappointed right now, it's not funny. But it's warring with the MANY other ways in which I am disappointed...
Clark has regressed. Lois is in love with someone who will never love her as much as she loves him and who certainly isn't the slightest bit interested in her right now. And I don't want Lois to come back to that.
ITA re Clana. Yup, they deserve each other. But the thing is, to me those characters we just saw aren't the 'real' Clark and Lana that I have seen grow over the seasons. They're some cardboard cutout version pasted on. I just... this is NOT the ending for them. It's not. I REFUSE.
I also refuse this ending for Lex, this plot for Oliver and this ending for Lana.
You have no idea the sheer amount of LOATHING I have for PS3. They gave Clana the STUPIDEST ENDING POSSIBLE, which gives them NO closure, making any woman who comes afterwards second place. Then they massacred Ollie's character. If I knew that they were going to bring him on as a regular only to ruin him, I would've never been that excited. >:(
I felt literally sick inside after watching this episode.
I'm completely miserable. I don't get it. I don't see the need. It completely ruined everything. What was the point? It's this neverending circle. I think they could've done a more mature storyline with Clark and Lana going their seperate ways without ruining Lois and Clark's future because now, it's like Clark will only love Lois because he couldn't have Lana... complete stupidity.
And Oliver! WTH.... I loved Oliver and Clark's friendship and you know this will come back to haunt them and their friendship won't be the same. :(
I think it's no coincidence that Slavkin & Swimmer have today officially fled to Melrose Place. I feel like Sato in Karate Kid Part II. "COWARDS!!!!"
I watch this show for Erica Durance's Lois Lane. THAT'S IT. The rest of it sucks right now. Jimmy (no slight on him) is my second favorite character right now by default.
