Revise, Wollongong, December 2010
Australian vidders and vid fans! Although we had to abandon plans for a formal Australian vidding convention this year, nushanakt has just announced details for Revise: The Art and Science of Contemporary Remix Cultures and we'd love to have an informal gathering of vidfolk there. Sing out if you are interested in attending and meeting up and we can organise some stuff around the conference. :)

If you haven't already heard, Vidukon is on the cards again in the northern hemisphere spring next year. A poll on dates and location and interest in helping organise over here.

Pilots Memorial/Revival Festival
Twitter results in some strange devlopments it seems... in a surprising (?!) turn of events, taragel, indigo419 and I are plotting some kind of Kara/Lee celebration/commemoration in the new year, probably around Feb 14 (pilots = love *g*). OK, I'm a bit foggy on dates (I wasn't in charge of that bit!), but stay tuned... Tara and Indi have it covered, I'm sure. :) Fics, vids, meta and squee will all be welcome but you'll have to answer to me if you so much as mention THAT FUCKING PIGEON.

I have pledged to make something for said festival... (IT'S WEIRD TO ME TOO! But they were very persuasive!) ... which brings me to the poll. I have recently, finally dug my BSG DVDs out of the closet of pain I shoved them into after the finale. And to my MASSIVE surprise, I actually have vids I want to make with them, but I am currently dithering about which to start with. Help!?

Where are the Friday Night Lights fans on my friendslist?! Get yourselves to this amazing, poignant and totally EPIC Songs for a Girl by jarrow. It's a Tyra/Landry vid in three movements, handling the nuances of their relationship--yes, even the part that made us think the show had jumped the shark--with exquisite restraint and delicacy. If you like the show and/or either of the characters AT ALL, watch it! Non-FNL-viewers: watch to see what you're missing. Some of the best vidding I've seen all year.

Also in my 'best vids of they year' category: absolutedestiny's Running Away, a gorgeous tribute to childhood imagination, friendship and shared dreams. The source is the movie 'Son of Rambow' but you do not need to have seen the movie to adore this. It is totally joyful.

Hee! It's like some weird, but lovely virus, because I've been feeling this incredible love for pilots lately. And while my Lee love is always constant, I'm surprised by how much I am totally loving Kara at the moment too. (Psst, I am working on a HUGE fic, so hopefully that will be done in time for the LoveFest! That's how I'm making them MINE :D)

The fact I'm into Kara (or have access to Kara, I think is more accurate, since I'm always *into* her but most of the time she confuses me greatly!) is all m_a_r_i_k_s's doing. We all help each other! :)

You know who made me fall in love with Kara - dualbunny and her two vids set to the "Pink" songs "I'm Not Dead" and "Cuz I Can." They're like the Kara versions of "Middleman" and m_a_r_i_k_s's "The Ledge" for me. When I don't have time to watch an episode fully, I just go watch those vids and I feel like I'm right inside the heads of Kara and Lee respectively.

*g* That makes total sense to me. dualbunny's vids are totally my go-to Kara vids too. I'm just glad I can watch them again without crying or ragefits! ;)

And that is insane-o flattering to have my vid mentioned in the company of m_a_r_i_k_s's and dualbunny's. They inspire ME (and those vids will be on rewatch a lot if I'm to do these new vids...).

Hey! He could never be Lee and he got his screen time - somethings I always find hard to forgive.

And in terms of his relationship with Kara, well, it's a whole different story. He's way too selfish and simply doesn't understand her (even on the intuitive level) most of the times. Suffice it to remember her comeback from the Cylon dollhouse and Anders' demands to be with him ASAP as well as his advice to "deal with" Ellen and then his backing down from the circle of death and accusing Kara of looking for scapegoats whereas that was exactly what he'd been doing just a few minutes earlier. I could never stand that kind of hypocrisy and double standards.

If Anders was on a whole other show, not competing for my girl, I would find him interesting as a flawed human being. I think the weaknesses in his character were realistic but could have been better explored (I'm not really sure the writers saw them as flaws!). And I did pity him some times.

But yeah, stealing screentime from Lee and stealing Kara, I can't forgive that. She deserves someone better than that--even if she doesn't want it or recognise it as such! :p

That's the problem. I don't think they did. It's like in my other vid, Diamonds - I tried to show the mutiny arc in a way the writers never allowed it to develop; the vid draws different conclusions and at my worst days it pisses me off so much; it pains me to realise how much potential they wasted. I'd gladly feel for Anders and Adama, enjoy their flawed characters getting explored on screen some more, if TPTB actually acknowledged their mistakes and failures as such. Including shooting Gaeta in his leg and total power takeover performed by Adama when he was no longer in condition to make vital decision for the whole fleet.

Gah. I should really stop.

Oh absolutely! I know, I know! It took me four hours to get through the episode where he shot Gaeta in the leg, and most of the time I was swearing or shaking with anger. Here, hon, come sit down with me. You know that anger will eat us up if we stay in it. For the pilots LoveFest we are not going to think about any of the other annoying stuff in the show--just the things WE responded to, ok? The things that made our hearts soar. :)

I notice a few people have voted for the angry vid in my poll--that's interesting--there is still lots of anger out there, I think. I don't want to sound like I'm saying 'don't feel like that'. Just... we can hang on to other stuff.

I'd gladly vote for all three of the vids you suggested here. But I think there's a difference between what you'd like to make in theory and what you *need* to vid. Maybe you'll produce them all in time, but now something tells me that nothing could be more healing than a Lee POV vid as a first step. It could liberate you in some ways, make you open up to the show as we'd come to know it, pilots in particular.
