Angst

I'm all melodrama today. My external harddrive has died, taking with it my vidding files, music and much television. I'm kind of still in shock. And mourning. No vidding for me in the short term... *weeps*

The good news is that I've got a lot of vid reccing that I've been wanting to do for ages so expect many recs in the near future! In fact, I can't wait any longer to rec a couple of vids in particular.

The buzz around [livejournal.com profile] lim's multifandom Us vid about fandom has been incredible, so most of you will probably not need any introduction to it. I'm still adding my voice to the chorus in support of this remarkable accomplishment. It pleases both my vid-geek and my meta-geek selves. :-) This is a vid that prompts reflection, that encourages the viewer to make their own connections. It's a chance to step back and think about why we're here, what we love about it, and how all this evolved...

The other vid which has blown me away in the last week, is [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu's Living Dead Girl, a character study vid for Faith from BtVS/AtS. Faith is one of my favourite Jossverse characters, and this vid felt so perfectly true to her character. The creative vision and structure is strikingly original and entirely successful--watching this vid is kind of like getting jacked straight into Faith's subconscious. It's at the opposite extreme from [livejournal.com profile] lim's vid--visceral rather than reflective, it is a dark and dizzying journey into slayer consciousness. It takes you 'under the skin' of a character in that way that great fanart can. I've watched it many, many times and certain moments still make my heart leap every time.

Speaking of fandom and the way it takes over our minds, I need to vent about my nightmare last night. So, apparently I'm deeply anxious about Lee and Kara (surprise surpise *g*) and my subconscious decided to take on the battle last night by allowing me to face the worst possible scenario. This included deadly infectious diseases, self-sacrifice, rape, cannibalism, disfiguration by fire, pregnancy, enslavement, getting frakked by Cylons (both actually and metaphorically) and continued complete misunderstanding of one another. Dear Gods, may this dream not be prophetic, for it was disturbing in the extreme! *shudders*

I think I'm going to go watch David Tennant be cute to cheer myself up ... when does Who start again?!

Yikes. You have my sympathies. I've had my laptop's internal hard drive dying on me twice in the last ten months alone, so I've learned my lesson on regular backups, esp. while the last 10 months were also spent (1) working on my thesis, (2) getting into the SV fandom, and (3) compelled by #2 to cave in and compulsively download/watch vids.

Will watch them later, but thanks for the recs! I usually stick to SV vids only, but I just might expand my horizons. :D

Thank you for your sympathy! I had a lot of stuff backed up in various places, but my vidding files are simply too enormous to back up anywhere else, so they're gone.

I stuck to SV vids to begin with too, until my addiction just grew and grew and now I'm watching vids in fandoms I have never been into and probably will never be in to. It's a disease, I'm telling you! ;-)
