MIFF over: Boppy back

So the Film Fest swallowed me whole but has now (thankfully) spat me back out the other side. As usual, I feel a little tattered and bruised, but no major damage I think... *pats self*

The highlights of my final selection of films were The Host and The wind that shook the barley.

The Host

The (many) Koreans in the audience started laughing within the first scene--it took me until scene three. Nevertheless, this was thoroughly enjoyable in a really crazy way. The film was spectacularly schlocky yet also had some fantastic comedic set-ups that would have done Joss proud. It has to be seen to be believed, but suffice to say that the movie involved bio-chemical warfare (Agent Yellow!), a very well-animated monster, a narcoleptic idiot father, a wise old 'grandpa' figure (whose speeches put the other characters to sleep--literally), an Olympic archery champion whose Achilles heel was her inability to fire quickly (?!?!) and a university graduate with no career... they all chase around after the cute-as-a-button monster-bait schoolgirl, while being pursued by the authorities. There's some nice commentary on US foreign politics, and part of the movie was clearly a satirical take on SARS... so really, there was something for everyone. *g* It's going to hit the midnight movie circuit in no time...

The wind that shook the barley

I like Ken Loach's movies. He's a master at understatement and realism. He has coaxed some incredible performances out of actors, and his films steer well away from simplistic messages or sentimentalism. Land and Freedom was one of my favourites--it's about the Spanish civil war--so I was all there for him returning to similar themes in The wind. It definitely measured up well. This is by far the best performance I've seen Cillian give and I think he was very well cast here. He oscillates between fragility and terrifying hardness in a confronting role. As in Land and Freedom, Loach shows the way politics when pushed to an extreme end under the pressure of civil conflict can result in horrific acts that further scar and divide people. He also shows the passion that lies inside people when they fight for what they believe in, even when, as in Cillian's character's case, it drives them to turn against their own brother. It's not an 'easy' movie. But it feels gut-wrenchingly real. The world ain't pretty and there's no simple solution.

On a lighter note: EYES! Good god, that man's eyes! There is one moment (I won't spoil) when he looks up and holds his gaze straight at the camera--and, eek, it sent chills down my spine and my heart thumping for him at the same time. Eerie.

So now that that's all over, I'll have more time to play. *waves*

I missed [livejournal.com profile] talitha78's birthday!! WOE. I hope you got many lovely things and had a great day. You are my fandom hero, sweetie! Best wishes for the year ahead.

I probably missed a bunch else besides... feel free to fill me in! *g* And yes, I may actually be around a leetle more now. And will stop posting about boring movies you have no intention of seeing. I promise the next post will be fannish-ish. ;-)

K!!!! I am sooooo glad you will be around more often! I have missed you!

Um, yes. That's all I have to say. :D

Yay! *hugs* It's nice to be missed. ;-)
I look forward to being around more.

Oh, yay! You're back! Welcome back!

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* Thank you! *twirls, though not in a ballet way*

OMG--I just realised that I had a dream about studying ballet. In my dream we had to do pirouettes on carpet and there was a lot of Angst about this and how it would be difficult. Interestingly the other dancers were male... but they all wore pointe shoes. Brain? *taps* Hm. Ok, that's all I got.

[identity profile] chimosa.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
LOL!

Aw, man, that is so wonderfully random. I've definetly had the angst dreams where I have to perform something Very Hard and I can't for reasons that are totally understandable when I'm asleep. Oh! And the dream where I and Marilyn Manson were Animorphs. *nods* Good times.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Randomness indeed! I'd trade you the animorph dream for my ballet one. Hee! Who knows what it was really all about? Probably editing anxiety... *shrugs*

[identity profile] carpenyx.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for more play time. :)

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed! Cutie icon. ;-)

[identity profile] mailerose.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Whee, welcome back!

I found new pics of a couple pretty CW boys? If that interests you ;)

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh... yes? (and your icon is supersuave!)

[identity profile] mailerose.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes... check my latest 'secret' post. (And thank you! I now want to get myself a red umbrella... as well as a pair of pointy-toed red pumps.)

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
OK will do!
I love red shoes--I'd never thought of the red umbrella, but now that I've seen your icon, I feel like I should have been on to it earlier...

Welcome back!

I would like to see The Host--it sounds like the kind of movie I'd enjoy. The other one sounds like the kind of movie I might accidentally get sucked into when it plays on one of the premium channels and I won't want to keep watching but I won't be able to stop until the end.

Cillian Murphy manages to be both beautiful and creepy-looking.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! And hee.

I won't want to keep watching but I won't be able to stop until the end.
Yeah... I can see that there are many people in the world who would not go voluntarily to his movies. They are not easy on the soul. But I'm mesmerised by the skill and clarity of vision it takes to make them. If you do tune in accidentally to it at some stage, you have reason to fear the ending. Cillian is both beautiful and creepy in this movie--brilliantly, Loach cast him as a character who is emotionally beautiful yet creepy as well--perfect casting.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm very glad you're going to be back, though I will probably be the absent one. :-(
