Vidding chat

Recently I've been having a lot of lengthy and very rewarding conversations about vids and vidding with various LJ friends (some vidders, some vid-watchers). Mostly these conversations have been one-on-one by email or IM, and since I've been discovering that there are other people out there who want to have similar discussions and who have a lot of interesting insights, I started thinking about providing an informal forum for this on LJ.

I know there are vidding communities out there that are already outstanding resources for vidders ([livejournal.com profile] vidding and [livejournal.com profile] mac_vidding_101 are my to go-to places for tech advice and vid meta), but what I had in mind was something a lot more informal.

Vidding can be very lonely. Even vid viewing can be lonely. I remember when I was not yet vidding myself but was obsessively watching vids and I felt like no one really wanted to hear me go on and on, again!, about what I loved about certain vids. And overwhelmingly I felt like I didn't have the right words to do so anyway. Even leaving feedback to vidders--maybe especially doing so--I felt like I couldn't describe what I was feeling, or why.

Now I make vids myself and I still don't know! I still feel that I don't have the words when I watch a vid with sophisticated effects and want to tell the vidder it's awesome. 'Dear Vidder: the whooshy effect with the sparkles at 0.32 was kickass!' (Subtext: how the fuck did she do that? I wish I could. OMG, I suck!)

I'm not alone. I know that. But so often we don't actually talk to each other about it. Or maybe some of us do, but I'm finding there's quite a lot of vidders out there who don't have anyone else to talk to.

So what I had in mind was making a regular weekly post about vidding and inviting discussion about different subjects: song choice, clipping, storyboarding (or not storyboarding!), effects, credits, different narrative styles, use of motion, colour, etc. They won't be 'teach-y' posts, and they won't be 'how-to's. Sorry, but I don't have the skill! I also don't believe there's only one way to learn this stuff, or one way to vid. I know a wide range of vidders who vid for different purposes, with different aesthetics, in a range of different styles. What I'm hoping is that this will be an opportunity to trade ideas and thoughts.

I might sometimes rec a vid I think is a good example of what we're discussing, or invite you to do so--sharing vids with others has been a really valuable experience for me. For instance, in reccing vids to [livejournal.com profile] daybreak777, I've come to discover that our tastes differ in terms of type of narrative we respond strongest to. That's a really useful thing for me to remember when vidding: not everyone likes the same type of structure, and each have their own strengths.

The most important thing to state is that everyone would be welcome. If you've made one vid, then feel free to talk about what you learned making it. If you've never made a vid but watch them, then tell us what works for you and what doesn't. Or even just tell us why you don't watch vids. Trust me: we'll be interested!

[livejournal.com profile] daybreak777, my partner-in-crime in this idea, has made a preliminary poll for all vid-watchers and vidders, to find out if you are interested in participating but also to find out if you're not, then why not: Are you too shy? Too busy? Not interested?

I'll bear the results in mind in picking early topics, but for this week, I simply ask: what do you think? Are you interested? Do you have any reservations? What would make it work (or not work) for you?

Any/all thoughts welcome. :) Help us find the words!

I am completely and totally up for vidding meta. I'm constantly trying to improve my vids and get more in touch with my potential audience and I think this would be a great way to do that.

Awesome! I hope that it will help with exactly that: getting in touch with our audiences and finding new ways to improve.

They won't be 'teach-y' posts, and they won't be 'how-to's. Sorry, but I don't have the skill! I also don't believe there's only one way to learn this stuff, or one way to vid.

I just said this over at the poll, but your vidding posts have sparked some curiosity in me, and speaking as a complete newbie still only toying with the idea of one day tackling a vid project, I think those discussions will serve a fair more valuable purpose for new vidders if you don't try to make them how-to posts. After all, there are almost always various tutorials and such available for all sorts of things, but they often cover the how but not so much the why. I find the 'why' of how you do things can be easier to immerse yourself in and learn through the sorts of discussions you seem to be proposing, and (personally) find the lack of any theoretical grasp on that why a bigger stumbling block to trying new things than simply needing a manual to work the software.

So, while I probably won't have much to say given my current lack of vid-making history, I'll be interested to drop by and see the discussions! And happy to chime in if there's ever a call for the experience of a very sporadic vid watcher who has never quite (yet) been able to 'get' vidding, of course.

Cool! Thanks for the feedback and that's really gratifying and encouraging. I think you've tapped into exactly what we've been finding as well--you can learn a piece of software but making a vid on your own feels pretty weird at first when you don't have anyone to bounce ideas off. And while I know how to do that now, there's still heaps of stuff I don't know the 'why' of (principally effects).

Hee! I appreciate your willingness to speak up from a place of passing interest and curiousity--definitely! I hope you'll get something out of the convos. :)

If you build it they will come. Yay vid-talk!

Awesome! :)

I'm happy to contribute what I can... although I suspect there'll be a lot more opportunities for me to learn than to contribute :)

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hush you, you know I always find your thoughts enlightening! But yeah, I hope it will be useful for all of us.

[identity profile] bananainpyjamas.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll participate. It sounds fun. :D

Speaking of vid-talk, did you ever get that email with the question about my SV vid? I never heard back from you so I'm guessing hotmail was being screwy.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Eek! Are you serious?! I emailed you back 12 days ago--just checked my gmail account. I'll try sending again right now, ok?

[identity profile] bananainpyjamas.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Eek indeed! But never fear, I got the re-send. :D

*wipes brow* I had no idea! Didn't mean to leave you hanging. Let me know how it's going.

As posted on daybreak's site, I'd be very interested. I'm new to vidding having just finished my first and I'm not sure exactly what finally convinced me to try it. I learned a lot, especially that I have a lot more to learn. So I'd be very interested in any discussions.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Yeah, that's what I keep on learning from vidding: that I have a lot to learn. ;) But it's a fascinating journey and I hope is improved by having company. *g*

Congrats on your first vid! I'll have to hurry up and get off my BSG-diet and watch it. ;)

[identity profile] hazyshade.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a great idea, actually.
I'm not sure if I will EVER have time for vidding based on the workload for my masters course, but it would be great to talk/read about it at the very least! :)

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool! I'd love to have you around!

[identity profile] anoel.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I cannot be more interested! I actually had a similar idea a few months back with the same kind of discuss various elements of vidding mentality so this is PERFECT for me: less work, same fun stuff. And I do often feel lonely when it comes to vidding and vid watching and I don't know exactly where to turn so this would be very helpful.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Oh, that's great! It's funny how lonely it can be, isn't it? I'm finding one way to fight that is to form closer friendships with other vidders but it can be hard to know where to start. I'm hoping these discussions will facilliate that sort of networking and sharing of ideas.

[identity profile] daybreak777.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
You know of course, that I am on board. The response to the poll has been absolutely fantastic! Already discussions are starting and we haven't even started yet!

Can't wait!

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'm excited! :) Thank you for your email and poll co-ordination. I have read over and will respond when less busy (tomorrow?), but I think next Sat is great idea for start date.
