Tommy's birthday

Today is Tom Welling's thirtieth birthday. If Tom can come to terms with being thirty, I'm sure I can manage it in eight months time... yup, born in the same year--we've got soooo much in common! Um, nope. That's it. :-p

In honour of Tommy's birthday, I was going to post my favourite Tom pic (as many of my friends are doing), but I couldn't decide on one. So I'm calling on you all to help me out.

[Poll #973669]

Thank you for your help! If you feel I have clearly overlooked the ultimate Tom shot, by all means feel free to post it! *beams*

OMG!! *giggling so hard* I SEE the resemblance! We must discuss this further! (I'm gulping my coffee before heading to work), but yes the Ultimate Hair Period seems to enhance the resemblance perfectly!

And oh, do you watch SV at all?! Because Lex Luthor would LOVE you right now. He is all about classical references. He likes to soliloquize to Clark (Tom) a lot...

Tragic love!! (You realise now that if I rec you SV fic, uou get to use Antinous in your mental imagery, right?! *g*)

[identity profile] dionusia.livejournal.com 2007-04-26 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh goodness, I really must dig out all those pictures I snapped of Antinous' lovely face in every museum I was in...damn, I hope I have one at just the right angle! Hee. Yes, we can definitely pursue this later.

And oh, do you watch SV at all?! Because Lex Luthor would LOVE you right now. He is all about classical references. He likes to soliloquize to Clark (Tom) a lot...

I was thinking about starting in on the DVDs of the old seasons, but this makes me want to start watching RIGHT NOW! Do you think I could just jump in? I mean I understand the basic premise...I think.

You realise now that if I rec you SV fic, you get to use Antinous in your mental imagery, right?!

YESSS! Awesome.

Antinous...the ultimate lesbian-ish youth. Yes, you can get your crush on, even in classics! *swoon*

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-04-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Heeee!! I am bouncing with joy that you may watch Smallville. HOWEVER, it needs to come with a massive warning that it's sometimes (often) the worst written thing in the history of television. The premise is awesome, the cast is superlatively beautiful, the visual imagery, symbolism and subtext are OUT OF CONTROL with awesomeness, but the writing itself is *facepalm* enducing. Especially in the early seasons. [livejournal.com profile] supacat had to forcefeed me Seasons 1-2, but then the addiction kicked in and I was done for... There are a few things that help when watching Smallville:
1. Never apply logic to the Smallville universe.
2. When bored, zone out on the Pretty--it is always there.
3. The faster you get into the subtext, the more likely you are to enjoy it. (You should watch the Pilot--the thing that happens in it--that's deliberate. Very.)

Antinous...the ultimate lesbian-ish youth
Heee! I am so going to pimp Antinous to the SV fic writers... I'm sure there's lots of fanfic material in having Lex acquire a bust of him...

Hee, thanks for the guide! I think I can handle it. I'll save my high standards for BSG, and drink in the pretty along with the symbolism. Plus, I will watch juvenile things like "The Saddle Club" or "Degrassi" on the channel meant for teenagers all the time, so I'm clearly okay with fluffier viewing. :D

The thing about Antinous busts, is SO much attention is given to the hair. It's always longish and with thick, voluptous curls. Everything else (the face, body, etc) can be like other generically awesome idealized statues, but the hair is unique. An incredible amount of work goes into sculpting each lock. (On a certain style of some portrait busts there are even four perfect little ringlets in the back...!) He's also meant to exemplify the ideal of youth, strength, and beauty -- perfect for a younger Superman!

Heee! I am so going to pimp Antinous to the SV fic writers... I'm sure there's lots of fanfic material in having Lex acquire a bust of him...

You are such a genius. Are you sure YOU'RE not a crackfic writer? *nudge*

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yup--save the high standards for BSG and you'll be right. SV has its own moments of genius--it's crack, pure crack, at times. And if you want advice on which eps are essential viewing and which can be skipped, just sing out!

Tommy doesn't reach Ultimate Hair Period until early Season 3, and recently the SV hairdressers have felt the need to damp the curls down and make him look more slickly Superman. We're all pouting. :-( But it's a very distinctive Tom feature, for sure--so the Antinous connection is very interesting. Clearly the sculptors were as much fans of the curls as I am! :-D

Are you sure YOU'RE not a crackfic writer?
HA. Um, well the only thing I've ever written is an unfinished crack WIP, so yeah... if I ever wrote anything, it would be crack. Lex is big on collecting artefacts so it wasn't much of a leap. And the more imbued with hidden symbolism about Clark they are, the more likely he is to fixate on them.

Oh, and sing out if/when you want me to pimp you SV meta (including lots of awesome lit-geekery), vids (so many brilliant ones) and the inevitable fic.

(This icon is early-Tom: he's very slender and fey in the early seasons--he has many phases of awesomeness. They are all good!)

[identity profile] dionusia.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Damn you, you temptress. You lure me with the pretty. And it works.

Mmmm...early-Tom, UltimateHair-AntinousTom, shirtless-Tom...

if I ever wrote anything, it would be crack

Ha! That's exactly what I used to say! I mean, um, DO IT!

And the more imbued with hidden symbolism about Clark they are, the more likely he is to fixate on them.

I don't even KNOW THIS FANDOM and this is making me laugh! And of course it would be sooo obvious to everyone else why Lex had acquired a sudden passion for Antinous portrait busts...and nude statues (believe me, almost all of them were nude)...filling his mansion with them!

GAH!

...and if I pout?

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Reposting comment because I frakked up the coding:

Heee. I am evil. It is true.

And today's a good day to be seduced by Tom. You can
- be introduced to the concept of Clark!face (http://literaryll.livejournal.com/41696.html?style=mine) here.
- admire his integrity (http://romanyg.livejournal.com/109039.html) here.
- and embrace his porny side (http://mskatej.livejournal.com/146746.html) with [livejournal.com profile] mskatej, who not only does great Tommy picspam, but also writes great smut, oh yes. (This is an older post, but a classic!)

it would be sooo obvious to everyone else why Lex had acquired a sudden passion for Antinous portrait busts...and nude statues
Heeee. Oh, yes, definitely! Actually my ideal scenario is of Clark bursting into the mansion to lambast Lex about something (he does this a lot these days) and coming face-to-face with a statue of himself. *giggles* And trust me, Clark's clue-y enough these days to be at least slightly suspicious that there may be an ulterior motive to Lex's sudden interest in classical sculpture! *giggles* (Oh, it is SO HARD not to spoil you!)

But if you do watch any SV, I challenge you to count the phallic symbols. Actually I challenge you to spot as many sexual metaphors as possible full stop. For a taster, here's Lex demonstratively sucking down some water (in front of Clark, of course!).

[identity profile] dionusia.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
EEEE! That icon!

You have me thinking that there will be phallic symbol drinking games in our household...

I'll go check those other links out! And I'll try to hunt down the perfect Antinous pic!

(Here's my 'How Apollo Got His Phallic Symbol Back' icon, since I'm Clexless...)

[identity profile] dionusia.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm back! OMG pickspasms of Tom. I feel like I've been assaulted by the pretty. And it feels good.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! In SV fandom, Tom's known as The Pretty and Michael (Lex) is known as The Sexy. So you can see it's a very fun combo!

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'll have to dig out my links to SV drinking games for you guys... it's such a good show for those because it totally builds on tropes and repetition. OK... season 1... let's think:
1. Any time there's a car crash or someone talks on a cell phone while driving.
2. Any time Jonathan says 'son...' and puts his hand on Clark's shoulder.
3. Any time Lex drinks T-Nant or plays with a phallic symbol.
4. Any time Clark makes Clark!face or uses an excuse 'umm.. it was the wind? ... adrenelin?'
5. Any time Lana wears pink.
HUAHAHA you are doomed! Actually, I shouldn't play the colours card, since SV is all about colour imagery--each of the characters is defined in their clothing choice (Clark in classic blues and reds, Lex in purple, Lana in pink... etc)

Apollo had to get his phallic symbol from Starbuck. OF COURSE! ;-)

[identity profile] dionusia.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, I noticed that from the pics, how they're constantly dressing him in blue and red. Awww, now I get it! Superman, right? Subtle! ;)

I saved this drinking game list in a handy word file. If productivity goes down around here, it's your fault. :P

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Smallville is ANYTHING but subtle! There are so many more I could add to that drinking game... but I'm sure you'll come up with your own!

(You're going to kill me for pimping you into SV, I know it... eeep! hopefully in a good way!)

[identity profile] dionusia.livejournal.com 2007-04-27 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Seems like great fun. Anyway all the regular shows will end soon, and there'll be less to watch. And our house does NOT decide to watch less TV even so, so this will be a very welcome diversion!

[identity profile] dionusia.livejournal.com 2007-05-06 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I’m back to report that I watched the pilot tonight, yay! (And more is on the screen right now.) I actually remember seeing it when it first came out, but I’d forgotten so much, such as:

Young Lex’s pre-asteroid hair, all bright red and poofy, like he’s some missing asthmatic member of the Weasley family! I laughed soo hard at that. Man, that disaster seriously did him--and us--a favor. Mmm, growed-up bald Lex. Bad boy fencer, drives while using cellphones. Wears leather driving gloves. Drives an aggressive stick-shift. Vrrooom!

Also, I remembered the thing about Lana’s necklace. But it’s so awesome that she has Clark-crippling kryptonite powers and boobies to make him go all woobily. He doesn’t stand a chance. Then later, when she’s visiting her parents’ grave, this is so classic: “I’m hangin’ out in a graveyard. Does this strike you as okay behavior?” BWAH! Oh, Clark. You feel so awkward! Like you’re from another planet! Except, you are! Oh, adolescence. Sometimes it almost makes you want to put your arm in a woodchipper.

Lana: “Dad wants to know if you’re upset about a guy…” Clark: “NO! No.” I’m not thinking about how my first open-mouth experience ever was with Lex…NO! Not at all! Haha!

Plus the Angel/wings symbolism in the cemetary! Eee. I love watching this show. Thanks for getting me into it, it’s so fun.

Especially with the drinking games. *hic*

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-05-06 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
that disaster seriously did him--and us--a favor.
Didn't it?! :-) It's also popular fanon that he lost all his body hair in the accident, though everyone handwaves the eyebrows and eyelashes.

Oh, adolescence. Sometimes it almost makes you want to put your arm in a woodchipper.
Hee!! Yeah, he's so terribly deeply angsty! And you've seen the pick-up truck with bow and card? :-) So cute!

Lana: “Dad wants to know if you’re upset about a guy…
I'd forgotten that one! Yeah, that's right... hee!

the Angel/wings symbolism in the cemetary!
Yes! That was gorgeous, wasn't it? The cinematography and symbolism gets even better over time, but I'm still very fond of that moment.

My favourite moment from the pilot is still when Lex throws the sword and Clark just watches it quiver with that nervous wide-eyed expression! *giggles*

[identity profile] dionusia.livejournal.com 2007-05-06 07:39 am (UTC)(link)

That made me snort-laugh very loudly out of my nose!

(Although, I myself am glad he has eyelashes. So fluttery and purty. Fanon can go ahead and imagine away the rest of his hair.)

My favourite moment from the pilot is still when Lex throws the sword and Clark just watches it quiver with that nervous wide-eyed expression!

OMG, how could I have failed to mention that! You're right, that was perfect. Lex is so aggressive and phallic-y there...also suggested that he sleeps with his fencing partner too. Lex is burgeoning with the promise of impalement right and left! Hahaha.

Well, this weekend I'm on my own basically, so I'll probably watch the rest of the next disk soon. Look what you've created. :D

I was also quite pleased by the second episode's Roman crucifixion and Trojan War classical references by Lex. He is far and away my favorite character so far.

Hmm must get Lex icons.

I'm not joking! There have been polls on this matter! And yes, I too am very happy that he has those eyelashes.

Lex is so aggressive and phallic-y there...also suggested that he sleeps with his fencing partner too.
Yeah, totally! It's pretty full on that he emasculates the future Superman in the early days of their relationship!! But he totally does. He's got control of all the phallic symbols--the cars, the swords, the water bottles... ohhh, ohh, and the apple! Have you had the apple crunch yet? You must have, I think. Biting into Clark's apple of tempation. Hee!

Yes, isn't he fun?! :-) That goes from strength to strength, fear not! He's such a flirt too!

When you've seen a little more, I recommend [livejournal.com profile] rivkat's I Know Things Now (http://www.rivkat.com/vids.html) vid. I recommend all her vids but the rest are majorly emotionally spoilery for later seasons.
